How do the two species of single stemmed caryota compare in appearance? I just go seeds for the C.gigas, but was wondering if they are a smaller version of the C.obtusa. There are alot of palms pictures on the web called C.gigas, but after seeing the RPS photo I'm wondering if they are actually C.obtusa.

Also can C.gigas handle truly tropical climates?

Thanks alot,

Kyle

As far as I know, C. gigas isn't an accepted name anymore, and has been placed with C. obtusa, so they are considered to be the same palm.

the above is correct, obtusa has precedence, mostly that surname refers to palms found in India. The gigas and Thai Mt. Giant palms are from Thailand. They are also some in China to a degree. But they are all the same palm, at least until a botanist says otherwise ...
