Modern Marvels: Fertilizer

Featured Replies

I watched this show just a little while ago. It was quite interesting. Here is the trailer text.

Fertilizer--without it two thirds of the world would starve. It makes our lawns grow greener and our crops grow taller. Take a tour of the places where the essential nutrients that feed the soil are harnessed. Dig deep in a phosphate mine, sniff around a sewage treatment plant and get dirty in a trough teeming with seven million worms. Finally, learn about a war that was fought over the control of bat poop!

One tidbit discussed was that each person's annual output of urine contained N, P, and K in sufficient amounts as to fertilize a crop of both wheat and corn sufficient for that same person's annual consumption..

Hmmmmm,

The phosphate mine they went to is a Mosaic mine. I work at a Mosaic fertilizer plant in Riverview, Fl, but not at the mine. I work in the production lab as an analyst.

Those draglines are like big houses on tank treads. Here's something neat: they plug in with a giant extension cord.

.

 Well..... Jordan has enormous phosphate reserves which cover about 60 per cent of its land area.

Jordan was the sixth largest phosphate rock producer in the world, the second largest exporter of phosphate rock in the world and is the world's fourth largest exporter of phosphate fertilizer.

But fertilizers without water resources......This is the end of the earth. This is like as hard as you can get. This is hyper arid. Completely salted landscape.
