I have smoked a pipe for a while and enjoy that but since the local tobacconist has only a handful of flavors and pipe stuff, I started trying a few cigars. I like the spiced ones, like the Acid series from Drew Estate and on the 'regular' side I really dig the Carlos Torano Silver Edition Exodus 1959.

Anyone else partake in cigars or the like? Dope excluded.

I do occaisionally smell my neighbor's cigar while sitting on my front porch in the evening even though his house is 800 feet away to the south, thanks to our prevailing southerly winds which have blown with gusto all spring. I have to say it smells good to me. I would love to know more about them.

Alan,

If you like the more spicy cigars, you must try a Partagas, these are great! Enjoy.

I'm a Baccarat Dolce Far Niente man, myself. It's a 30/40 minute cigar for about $4

The most difficult thing I ever did was quit smoking. That stated, the smell of a good Cigar is something that I like. The infamous "Monty Christo" of Cuban lineage is that which I hear to be the Best. The soil where the tobacco is grown is said to give the Cigar a very rich taste. The smoke is distinctive.

Alan,

It has been a little slow out there lately, especially in Ohana Nui. Tell ya what, I'll meet you on the back porch for a Cigar and a glass of wine to discuss palms. It is a little big long of a drive. Got a webcam? haha.

Alan,

Another good one you would like is Cohiba...the stepfather of a girl I once dated used to smoke nothing but that. They are quite good if you can find them. He had a buddy that would import them from Cuba somehow. There are actually two kinds so the ones you see here in the US aren't what he got, but I imagine they are similar in taste, if that's possible by some folks terms.

Posted

The Cohibas in The States are produced with Dominican tobacco... Not the same, not at all...

Posted

I have had some Cohibas, the non-Cuban grown ones, though I believe the seed is of Cuban origin. Tried a Padron today and it was pretty good, though out of my normal price range. I manage to get good bargains at the Thompson outlet center here in Tampa, if I did not I would smoke cheaper cigars, but at times I can find 7 or 8 dollar cigars for like a dollar each.

Thanks for your input, I was saving my Padron for a special occasion, but my birthday will have to do :P.

Steve, I will have to look for some Baccarat Dolce Far Nientes to try. If they are good enough for you they gots to be good enough for me.

Dear Alan :)

though i love the smell of tobacco & French Alcohals...here my doctor friends have always adviced me to refrain me from getting into this habit.so there were ocassions where i had to sit in a party sipping fresh line soda or some cool drinks where my friends & distinct relatives, cousions partied with alchohals & cigrets...

for sometime they were laughing at me,and made comments that 'will Kris survive even when we are gone' ? but i do not know much about that but iam really intreasted in seeing my Caryopha's,CIDP'S,Jubea put up hard trunk...

Though Hinduisium states about rebirth but i pray to god i have seen enough of the earthlings...and iam not intreasted to visit this planet once again.the beautiful nature & the exocitic animals is what gives me energy to carry on...

And i think you get my point, what iam telling you is, if possible stop smoking, since while i typed your birthday wishes with all the love and joy..it made it manditary, that i speak to you on this habit.since while i was typing those greetings,i wished 100 years of good health for you !

Hope you don't feel offended by my request... :)

Thanks for Reading this comment_Alan.

lots of love to you,

Kris :)

love conquers all..

Kris, thank you. I find it very unlikely that anyone could take anything you say as offensive.

Thanks for your concern, but as cigars are not inhaled I suspect my lungs should fare well, also it is not something one does with the same frequency as cigarettes, and I am guessing that infrequent use should preclude any untoward ill effects. Not absolutely, mind you, but minimally.

A bunch of really old men I know partake in cigars and seem rather vigorous for their ages, so I am not too worried. Some rather famous people smoked the stogy and lived to ripe old age, George Burns comes to mind.

A little of the good life shouldn't be enough to kill, gluttony on the other hand, can only end poorly.

Thanks, Kris for your kind warning.

Back in the late 50's...my father handled the advertising for the island of Cuba...the smell of H Upmans was warm and rich.

I have never smelt anything as good since...tho my cousin and went to a small cigar store here in Miami where they hand rolled cigars " La Gloria Cubana". It was great to watch the craftsman at work.

Have any of you guys ever smoked a Torano? I know the Torano family and would love to hear comments about their products...

You mean Carlos Torano? I mentioned in my initial post that the Exodus 1959 is one of my favorite. That one is mild, and a good smoke.

Whoops! Sorry Birthday Boy! That's what happens when one doesn't read all of the post! :)

Yes, as in Carlos Toraño... I don't even think Charlie smokes come to think of it, never seen him with a cigar in hand, but I'm sure his grandfather did!

This is funny that this topic popped up... When I went to the Orchid Festival last weekend, I smelled a pipe with some vanillaish tobacco in it, and it actually smelled good to me... This is strange cause I don't think much of second hand smoke... So it got me looking into pipes, particularly some vintage art-deco era churchwardens... There's some cool stuff out there... I have been designing a stone/bamboo pipe in my head for the past several nights and am about to start creating... I'm thinking green dendritic soapstone and black bamboo... Should be pretty cool! If I get finished sometime in the current century I will post a pic here.

I just counted up the empty cigar boxes here on my shelf...38.

Everything from Windsor to Cohiba (that's real cheap to real expensive). I prefer the Churchill size or thereabouts.

Let's see Helix, cohiba, Excalibur, La Gloria, Bolivar, Punch, Macanudo, sinatras, Sancho Panza, Hoya de Monterrey, Romeo y Julietta, Habano, Don Rafael, Partagas, Don Elias, Sonador, Onyx, Ghurkas and on and on and on.

I think in general Partagas are my favorites but I like the Monte Cristos too. About 30 years ago in London I got a box of the Cuban Monte Cristos. I think I was too young to appreciate them then. I don't buy cigars anymore because I get boxes of them from family and friends for Xmas and my birthday. I just recently ran out of the Xmas batch but I need a break until my b'day comes.

I just had a Fuente Opux X #4 last night and boy was it amazing. I had heard a lot about Opux X and my buddy at work went out and bought a whole box of them yesterday. He was nice enough to give me one of them, I think they cost around 9.98 a piece. This was by far one of the smoothest smokes I've ever had. It even maintained a bit of spiciness. One thing I noticed is as I smoked it my lips didn't begin to get that bitter tinger as with some of the more spicy varities. It was very good and I'll look out for another, I really don't smoke cigars as much as I used to, maybe 2 a month or so now.

Kool, thank you for reminding me of the H. Upman's, another one of my favorites.

I quit smoking 8 years ago, so it leaves me feeling nonchalant when people talk about cigars and pipe tobacco and the aromas, flavors, richness & smoothness etc. I reserve these observations for good food and wine - to which the subtleties would be completely lost to me, if I started puffing on a cigar. I prefer to seek out the subtle nuances from a heightened sense of smell and taste, over the more "intense" characteristics of nicotine.

no peach blunt fans? :floor: I like a hint of the smell, of pipes and cigars, but I too am a non smoker now!

Alan, you're on! :) Tell ya what, i will supply an appropriate beverage of your choice...now thats another subtext to the genre all together...some cigars go well with port, some with wine, some with sherry (for me the dryer the better), and then theres my favorite beverage of choice, a nice glass of Johnny Black...another thread entirely!
