At Edith Bergstroms place from 1-4 pm.

We are delighted to have an invitation to visit one of the most beautiful gardens in the area. The garden is large and diverse, including several microclimate niches from desert to tropical. Of course there is a spectacular collection of mature and exotic palm specimens to enhance your botanical experience. There will be a potluck and auction. More information to be posted soon.

I won't be able to go as I have another commitment. I'm bummed as Ive heard Edith's place is really nice.

Meeting at Edith and Erik Bergstrom Date: Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Time: 12:00 NOON

Location: 149 Hawthorn Drive, Atherton, Ca 94027

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are invited to the two acre garden of Edith and Erik Bergstrom. The last visit to this garden was seven years ago. Since then, they have purchased the property next door and expanded the palm garden. The new lot was flat. To landscape it Edith brought in tons of soil and compost and directed the construction of large berms and depressions. Granite boulders contribute to the berms, dry stream beds, and valleys. Part of the new construction included a conservatory with an indoor swimming pool. The Bergstroms have an outdoor and indoor collection of about 452 palms, (80 genera and 200 species).

You will see some lingering damage from the 2007 freezes, but in general the palms have been growing vigorously. The next issue of The Palm Journal from the Southern California chapter will carry an article written by Edith on the results of the very cold winter her garden experienced in 2007. The low that year was 17 degrees, two other nights of 18 and many nights in the low 20s. This new information should expand knowledge about the number of palms that northern CA gardeners, with less than ideal microclimates, can cultivate.

There will be a Potluck and Auction
