Since we don't have cute girls here in skimpy outfits to bring us prepared Betel nut, I was wondering if anyone had a recipe or technique that they would be willing to share...

I think you are just suppose to chew on the pulp and suck on the juice that comes out. Or did you mean like special brownies?

No Gene, no magic brownies...

But I thought Betel nut had to be prepared with a leaf or something and I vaguely recall hearing about adding lime or something?

I planted 2 trees from Jeff and they will have seeds some day... I just have to try it! It's not like taking dope from what I read... More like a stiff cup of coffee or cigarettes or something... I'm betting a couple Red Bulls have more kick...

Dear William :)

the still that you have posted is popularly called here as Beeda.and used commonly by North Indians.and to try varities of those you must visit bombay (mumbai).that they add bang or chewable tobacco_called Ma'Wa.and those pans or beedas are called zerdha beeda/zerdha Pan's.

And the best manufactures of these chewable tobacco in india is Tansen & 120 Baba..and i was told by my north indian friends the effect of consuming is like partial black out.so people chew this beeda and keep spiting the juice as they walk dirtying the entire walkway & dust bins !

Love,

Kris :)

William, from what I've read they add lime (not the fruit) or powdered coral to mashed up Areca catechu fruit and roll it in Piper leaf. There's plenty of info on it on the web. You can even find it in some stores here in the US. It's almost always canned and prepared, not fresh when we get it here. I haven't done it but I read up about it. I keep meaning to look when I shop at the local Vien Dong supermarket but I forget what the name is to look for.

Here is a photo from Palmfest 2005 revisited. Murray Corman brought a bunch of fruit for tasting, as well as these:

I believe we used a Piper Leaf Fig to hold it in like a chew, and cigarette ash for the lime factor? It was similar to chewing tobacco, just a little worse. :hmm:

Hi Guys,

I just fell out of my Wheel chair, :floor::floor::floor: and just getting out hospital after 2 op's thats not good

but when ya laughing that much, Anything can happen I guess, Hey hands up who was sick  , Be honest.

Couple of things if you are going to try Betel nut, you have the Piper leaf right, but as the earlier picture shows

(Green seed) is what you have to use, if its ripe she won't work and talk about rock candy at that ripe stage.

And the Lime you should use is shell grit, Shells crushed into powder guys, leave the ash trays alone thats yuck

Even chewing the seeds at the wrong time (To early) can give you the worst dose of the runs and I mean real bad stomach

Pains guys, You know what instead of all that, go buy a Bottle of Rum, or what ever you prefer You'll be better off in

the long Run :floor::floor: Thanks so much for the Laugh guys watch out you don't poison each other O.K,

"Remember, Lets Be careful out there."

Cheers All, Regards Mikey :)

I was really surprised with I was at Searles sale by how many people were asking for Betel Nut palms. Maybe in another 10 years we'll start seeing people walking around in South Florida with black teeth.

Bill, I have some Angel Trumpet's if you're looking for something to experiment with while you're waiting for your Betel nuts. :mrlooney:

I'll pass on betel chewing, thanks! Besides the permanently stained teeth and vulgar expectoration, long term use is now suspected to be carcinogenic to areas of the mouth and throat.
