Tenaja Falls

I started a hiking club at my church, and last week took 10 people out to see a 3-tiered waterfall just an hour from Oceanside. The Santa Ana Mountains don't retain water very long, so these falls are dwindling already. Next year I need to get here the day after a big storm.

The hike is fairly short, and you can see the falls from the trail as you approach.

The trail takes you to the top of the falls. From there you can carefully climb 20ft down to the first pool. I say carefully, because the polished granite is slick, especially if you have even a drop of water on your soles.

The view looking down the main drop is not for those with a fear of heights. 70ft straight down is my guess.

My other photos include people I know and some I just met, so I want to respect their privacy and not post the pics

Last December I came here with my daughter to check the falls out as a possible hike. There was no water, but the Fall colors were nice. Here is the view from the top, looking out over the u-shaped valley the creek flows through.

Farther up, above the top if the Falls. Yuccas grow wild here, as well as a lot of aromatic sage and chaparral. I noticed my daughter's friend in the background after I uploaded the photos.

My daughter took this photo of me. The two places I'm in my element are hiking on the trail or surrounded by palms. Hiking with palms would be the ultimate.

Rich - Next year for sure. Drive over Ortega Highway, and meet me at the Starbucks at the Clinton Keith exit on Hwy 15. It's a 25-minute drive to the trailhead from there.

Terry,

Hiking with palms? Take it to the next level. Take a trip somewhere wher you can see some exotic palms in habitat. The biennial in Costa Rica would of done the trick. :D  Hopefully some day it will happen.

Jeff

Nice pictures of the hike you made. The rocks are beautiful.

Looks like an excellent hike with new views from the falls. Hiking is probably my favorite outdoors activity.

Hey Terry, I'd love to hike out there sometime. When I live in Hawaii I went hiking every single weekend!  :o

Thanks for the hike report and photos, Terry.  Looks like a fun hike and the waterfall is beautiful.  There's always another trail to discover around here, thanks, I've put it on my list.

Jeff - Is there a location for the biennial after Costa Rica? That's how much time I have to get my wife on board. If the location is right, it's that much easier.

JakeK - I bet you have some unexpected hiking places. Post some photos of any hidden gems.

Dave - Your near-swoon might be vertigo from Post 3. Not a place you want to loose your balance.

deezepalms - I remember your photos of Borrego Palm Canyon in Anza. I sense a new type of PRA developing.

kim - No comparison to Madagascar, but I am partial to the SoCal landscape. I'm definitely hitting the San Jacinto trails again this Summer. Have you hiked the Desert Divide/Spitler Peak area?

Terry, we should start our own "north county" PRA. You never know, it could catch on!  :D

Terry great shots! I love the colour of the rock at those falls.

Bubba - When I moved from LA to Port Richey FL in 92' - I really missed the mountains. I love being surrounded by them.
