Thanks to the City of Oakland, and an even bigger thanks to Darold Petty, we have successfully transplanted this unusual palm.  It had fallen over (taken some trees with it) but was still growing, and had already turned its growth toward the sun.

The first day was mostly futile, but the second day went much better, due mostly to Darolds expertise.  Working away from the stability of cement paths made for some interesting moments.  We lifted it with an engine hoist and a come-along anchored to a massive P. reclinata x canariensis....

As we swung it around and towards the back gate, we accidently took out a couple of Juania australis, I hope their not too hard to replace....

Ok, now I have your attention!..just kidding about the J australis by the way...

Anyway, we rolled it down the hill and hoisted it up on to the trailer.

Overall, we had a great time.  I can't think of a better way to spend a weekend.

Im planting it over my swimming pool, I'll get some pictures soon.

I didn't get a pic of the P roebellini x rupicola before we pulled it up.  It was hard to see anyway as it had fallen onto other plants and trees.  There was only the one in the Palmetum, as far as we can tell by the records.  It looks like a roebellini on steroids.

I don't have any other pics of the P reclinata x canariensis.  IMHO the crown is unattractive.  I can tell you that it is an incredibly massive clump, that creates an area of shade wider and deeper than any other palm I have ever stood under.

Looking forward to photos of it in it's destined spot.

Just like Bogart going to Casablanca for the healthful waters, Glenn Harris was 'mis-informed'!   :D

Recent communication with the original Palmetum director, Garrin Fullington, has revealed that this palm is the reverse cross,  Phoenix rupicola x roebelenii. It was purchased by Warren Dolby from a nursery in Fremont, CA, circa 1982, labeled as P. rupicola, and obtained by that nursery from the Huntingtion Garden.    Osideterry, you have a sharp eye!

It required 19 man-hours to dig and load this palm onto the trailer.  Glenn's brother, Jim, gave up his week-end to assist us.

Thanks for the clarification, Darold.  Jeez, 19 man hours...I didn't realize it.  I kept going when I got home, so the job was only half over!

Also, thanks to my brother Bill, I couldn't have done it without him.  When faced with a difficult scenario, his attitude has always been, "Well, LETS JUST PICK IT UP!"  His brute strength amazes me.

Hello everyone.

Seems to be a resent interest on

Phoenix & their hybrids recently...

esp. since I recently purchased one also.

It would be great if Ghar can update us with pics.

So you're planting it over your pool as in leaning over it? That would be REALLY COOL!

Can't wait to see a photo!
