We have a little house here in Manaus that we rebuilt over the past 8 months.  Part of the house I turned into what in reality is an indoor garden joining the carport.  Since it is a small covered space only small palms or seedlings can be grown there.   It is not much compared with some of your gardens, but it is a nice little spot in the tropics.  A lot of the plants I have collected while out in the forest over the past few years.   And, a lot of them got a bit neglected over the past year.  But, they seem to be doing ok now.  I made the structure out of ipe which is one of the best tropical hardwoods for outdoor use.

Does anyone know what the palm in the lower left hand corner is?

A little Acrocomia aculeata which is called mucaja here.  I was given a couple young plants which they pulled out of the ground in the village of Mucaja, famous for the tree.  This one is supposed to have the best eating fruits.

The little Leopoldinia pulchara plants I pulled up on the river bank in November of last year.  They have survived, although they have not developed too much.  But, I think they will do better now in their new home.  There are some seedlings of Oenocarpus mapora scattered around as well.

This is a Syagrus cocoides.  It was also pulled up by some of my forest guys in January.  It has not grown much, but it is still alive and looks like it is going to do ok.

That's very nice, Don.  I really like the look.  And what a great place to keep smaller palms, orchids and other shade-lovers.

Beautiful setting. Palms look real nice and happy. I have a good friend here that builds docks and decks, and he almost always uses ipe wood. It is a beautiful wood and very dense.

Can you post another pic. of the small palm you want us to ID? Maybe move it into more light.

And finally, this setting would make a nice place for a cold cocktail after a long day.

Thanks everyone I am glad you liked my little project.  The garden makes a nice view from inside the house as well.  Jeff, a cold cocktail does go well at the end of the day.  Ipe is great material, but sure is not easy to work with.  Besides being extremely hard and unforgiving it has a chemical in the sawdust which is extremely irritating.  This why termites go the other way and won't touch the stuff.  We also made the windows and doors in the house of ipe.  One nice thing of being out of the USA is that you aren't all tied down my codes and can pretty much make what you like.  Not that codes do not have their place, but they sure do limit your options and increase your cost.
