I bought this palm about 7 years ago in a 3 gallon container specifically for this shaded spot off of the pool deck. In a tight container, this palm really does well here. I believe it can withstand some drought and certainly deep shade. I pulled it out just to hose it off...it does get sooty mold and some mealy bugs from time to time since it gets no rain water exposure.

The fronds make this palm very unique and distinctive.

Anyone else growing this great, delicate under story palm?

Here are a couple seedlings...hopefully they look like yours someday. They came inside for the winter and have to stay up high to keep my 2 year old away from them.

I think this one will make it with protection in Tallahassee. It is  best planted in groups of three. It will get tall, thin trunks like mine eventually.

So, that middle plant up there, the rhapis.  Did you get that this year at Walmart?  That pot looks familiar

Keith, I was going to say the same thing....I have one of these I bought last summer at walmart.. I mange to fry it and gave it too much sun right off the bat. however I took advantage of the 1 year warranty and picked up a replacement about a month ago.  I think this will stay potted on the front porch.

I found a group of 6 of them on the sale rack at the local Walmart marked down to $3.88 each.  I bought all six.  I have them lining a small walkthru in a shady area under some Live Oaks.  The cold didn't seem to faze them at all.

damn nice! wish my walmart would do that....

they had parlor palm and cat palm in 1 gallons for $4 each. best deal around here. (common chams)

regarding walmart garden center:  I talked with the garden manager and saw a group of windmills and med fans seperated from the other plants.  they had been at walmart since last year and all got infected with scale. an inspector comes out apparently and checks them. he denied them and they in quarantine getting treated with a chemical I can't remember to kill the scale.

my mothers property is dense oak, pine, sweetgum canopy that only needles and chinese fans grow in now. trying to get rhapsis and hardy chams on the cheap.

Target Garden Centers are always a good place to check for inexpensive palms......they are having a sale this week I think.

This has been a dependable palm for me so far.   I started these under C radicalis, now they are emerging.  They still get plenty of protection...helping them stay unaffected by 24.9 F last winter.

I used to grow C. oblongata and it was one of my favorites. They don't hold to many fronds, so they look better with 3 or 4 in a container. I used to stagger mine by putting in a couple of smaller ones when I repotted them to a larger container. I found them not to be all that cold hardy, and all of mine were killed in the '89/90 freeze, but then most of my Chamaedoreas were killed in that freeze including some speciman C. ernesti-augustii, Metallicas and Stoloniferas and a lot of hybrid Chamaedoreas.
