Not sure if this has been posted before, but WOW. I heard the skirts can slide down. This guy looks pretty lucky to be alive.

Here is the commentary:

The man was working to trim the dead fronds at the base when several hundred pounds of the tree above him slid down and crunched him at an awkward angle against the tree. Long Beach firefighters did a great job spending most of a hot afternoon gingerly cutting the tree away from the man. One firefighter at the top of a 35 foot extension ladder had quite a stiff neck/back at the end of the incident as he supported the man's weight the entire time

He was very lucky.  What I found more disturbing was the other video listed on the same page in youtube that showed a guy cutting down a perfectly healthy large Cuban Royal...sacrilege!

Hurt to see that tree go down, but at least the music was awesome.  The Aussies know how to rock.

but i was simply admiring the lean guys stamina...cut after cut

all were done with razor sharp prescion and with least damage to the surrounding.that guy is a pro and knows his work and the way he drops the gas powered chainsaw is like watching the movie cilffhanger and looks like a baby stallone at work...!

I too watched the Big "azzed" cuban royal "take down," with SloMo action showing each segment biting the dust, rockin to AC/DC.

To some, destroying a magnificent palm is cool...hella cool.  :(    :(

Eating palm hearts is not a crime...but is should be.

I noticed that the adding comments option to the YouTube Royal take down was eliminated. I have a feeling there must have been too many derogatory remarks being made, so they disabled it. Seems like such a waste of a beautiful, heathy palm.

Dear David  :)

how are you and i would love to show that but now it has grown in leaps & bound from last year...and i cannot reach it with a normal sized bamboo lader..and even my wife does not like to see me climbing trees like monkey's any more...but recently while i was doing window shoping i came across a chainsaw of hitachi heavy machinery division.the equipement was green in colour and its a made in japan stuff and box packing working in voltage230.i like it but i want be able to use it since my cidp triming will take atleast 18 to 20 years... :(

By the way around 8 to 10 years back we cut down 2 coconut trees and one royal palms...very healthy onces and were not too old..purpose of removing it was primiraly due to govt telephone lines and power lines interfeared in its way and also the fronds and coconuts broke a couple of windshiealds of parked vehicles outside our compound which belonged to our neighbours.we had to compensate for the loss and they often broke my mom's crotons placed in beautiful terracota pots !

but the operation was crude, not to the perfection mastered by that young lean lad.around 6 or 7 guys were employed who did the job.and by god i felt very happy that from now on my neigbours or the govt.maintanence dept will not be pestering us anymore....!

so the thought for the day one man's food is often others man's miserey !  :(

But what iam unable to understand in that cuban royal take down is that it did not interfear with anything and the plot looks preety sapcious unlike our house here...so its bit painful to see a healthy "Jamboo" being cut in a unceromonious fashion. :(

Love,

Kris.

The skirt of dead leaves on a Washingtonia can be ten, twenty or more feet in length.  Sometimes old leaf bases blow off during a wind storm.  Other times they'll slide down all at once.  When the old leaves'skimpy attachment to the trunk is finally rotted away, they come down sometimes in one big block.  This is the risk to the tree trimmer.  It seems, every year out here in California, someone is killed by the falling skirt.  It constricts the climber and suffocates him.  A better way is to be in a cherry picker and not attached to the trunk below the dead leaves.  If they go, the man in the cage is safe.
