Glamorous new vacation property

...OK, so it's a trailer. But it's right smack-dab in the middle of the best fishing, bird hunting, ohv riding and skiing in California.

After LA stole the water out of the Owens river in 1920, they were just ordered to rewater 62 miles of river between Big Pine and Owens Lake. This property lies right in the middle of the newly rewatered valley.

Can't believe after all these years L.A. was ordered to rewater Owens. I don't know Steve, looks like something out of 'Erin Brockovitch'. When are you going back to Hawaii?

Tim...never been to Hawaii. If I do, I'll get the same sickness that engulfed "the other Steve" on this board.

Bill...this is the one that I need you to talk me through when I fire up the gas furnace...soz I don't get all blowed up. It's been empty for three years. Hard to imagine a resort like this being vacant for that long.

Matt... I bet your 'coach' doesn't have pink sinks like mine

I like it Steve!  It looks like a great place to base out of.  Is that in Lone Pine?  And you're right, that's a great area for all sorts of outdoor activities.

If you are on Natural gas, should be easy. If on propane or LP.......well, I gave you my cell, but make sure you have 911 programmed in..  :)

It's in Independence...

Bill...it's propane. And it's a Coleman furnace.

Yes Tad, it's the next project, but I've still got about 3 months to go on the house remodel. I would for sure get the stink eye of all stink eyes from the misses if I started on the trailer before the house is done.

Steve, can't tell who has the bigger smile, you or the dog.

Edit - Danged Steve, you beat me too it.  Had to take a dig on Tad on that one.

I had those birds by 11 a/m. Rex was only about 16 months old, he pointed and retrieved the first two chukar about 20 min into the hunt. Then I put his mama and uncle on the ground, and got all the quail in short order. As we were driving up to the spot where the photo was taken for an early lunch, a covey of 30 chukar flew across the trail. I jumped out and loosed mama and uncle again. One dog goes on point...I shoot, and while it's being retrieved, I notice the other dog on point..shoot again, dog goes for retrieve, now the first dog has dropped his retrieve and is on point again. I got my last four chukar, and my buddies got six more from that covey...with dogs pointing and retrieving as fast as they could. It was a bird hunters dream....

So yes, I was proud of my dogs.

Great picture.  We should all be so fortunate as to die doing what we love, or at least die doing who we love.  :)

Steve,

Is the Firehouse Grill or something with a similar name still down there?  I was exploring down in Inyo county and we drove home via 395 and Yosemite.  I remember eating some good steak somewhere in that area, but that was at least 10 years ago.

The only place to eat in Independence is a Subway sandwich shop. You must go to Bishop or Lone Pine for a real sit down meal. Both of those towns are bit commercialized for my needs. I can go out to eat in Fallbrook.

Independence has a population of less than 400. It's the Inyo county seat, and LADWP as well as Caltrans have operations there. However, a good percentage of the residents are part time...using it as a jumping off point for recreational stuff.

Inyo county is 98% public or municiply owned land, 2% privately owned.

Robert - There is a place south of Lone Pine I hit every time I go through their. Real rustic looking, with mounted animal trophies all around. I think it's called Ranchhouse Grill or something like that. The best chicken-fried steak in California in my opinion, and I lived in Missouri and Texas until I was 27.

Terry,

I googled the place and it is no longer in existance.  Apparently it wasn't highly rated when it went under (duh).  Ten plus years ago they had killer steaks though.  It was built in an old fire house, hence the name.

Yes...women get exited about such things. When my wife first saw the beautiful sinks, she teared up and said things like "How could you.." and "You'll rue the day" (Rue is a shade of pink, I think). Then she got all hip and started using words like 'fool' and doing some weird dance moves.

So, you're right...don't show your wife.
