Every 2-3 years I take a drawing or painting class just to get rejuvenated creatively. In the past it's been more drawing and watercolors. I just got into oils 3 years ago, and this is my first plein air class.

Since my class met as Balboa Park last Friday, I had no choice but give the two Bismarcks a try. What you see is an 8x10, 2 hour "sketch".

When you are using thick paint and big brushes on a small painting, it's hard to get too detailed. The hard part was having a constant audience. Next to the pond it's a parade of people, and all stop to look and talk.

I think if you step back from it, it looks much better. I went back 50 metres and they look exactly like bizzies.

Good job Terry I too have given the canvas a bash, and I do really like it.

Wal,

I went back 150 feet, I couldn't even make out the colors littlelone see the bizzes!! :D  Of course I was standing outside the front door,as I don't have a room 50 meters long!

Thanks for all the positive reinforcement guys.

Wal - I'm near-sighted, glasses since I was 13, but I paint the first hour without them. Don't want to see details, just colors and shapes. The challenge is suggesting palms rather than rendering every leaf or frond.

Luke - No cute girls. One classy older lady said it was "pretty", and a guy asked me if I sold my work. I have to get to where I know what I'm doing first!

I hope we go somewhere with palms again next week. I look forward to being the guy who paints palms.

That is very good!  And I think that it's good that you paint the first hour with just your natural sight, instead of with glasses - because that is your unique perception of your world.

An art teacher of mine (decades ago) told me that, when I was having difficulties.  He said, "Take off your glasses - what do you see?"  And I said mostly flat smears of color." (am profoundly nearsighted since birth)  And he told me that is what I should build on.

I really like the way you captured the "spirit" of the bizzies, as well as their color, if that makes sense.

Good work Terry!  Wal gave me an idea so I stepped back about 4 meters and looked at the painting on my computer screen.  It was just amazing how much more detailed the picture looks from further away!  Really nice job!

Nice Picture I used to call that style the blurry style, but your right it does look "impressionistic" . I am not as cultured as most. Keep them coming that is a nice painting. Maybe you can do a different species each month and put out a calender.

You are no doubt a skilled artist.  Perhaps you should sign all of your palm paintings as "Oceanside Terry" or "osideterry."  It would be a cool pseudo name for your palm paintings.
