Hi, my name is Joe and I have been on this forum far more than I should...

This whole palm addiction thing just sort of snuck up on me...

I joined back in November 07 and have been reading up on all the old posts and even have posted in a few of the threads.  It dawned on me that I should introduce myself so you would know who I am...

I live in Huntington Beach with my wife and two kids (4 year old daughter and 1.5 year old son).  We have been in the house for about a year now.

I was innocently looking to add some plants to our yard to make it more tropical.  King and Queen palms were an obvious choice until I found this site...18 tropical palms and 3 months later,  I find myself studying my yard to see what other palms I can get for the various locations.

I will post pics of the yard and would love to get feedback from the forum as to what palms I should get and where  I should put them...

I hope that after a few years, I will be able to pass on some of the palm knowledge that I have learned here.

Good to know you.  Welcome to the palm addicts 2-step program.

Hi Joe,

It's great to have you on the Forum! :)  In order to make sure your addiction REALLY takes hold you should join the PSSC (Pallm Society of Southern California) and the IPS, and make sure you attend as many PSSC meetings as possible. Preferably every single one - you'll make lots of new friends and they're all even deeper into this than you are... :D

Also, visit the various nurseries between LA and San Diego that specialize in palms! They have lots of incredible palms.

Unlike AA which helps you control, or manage your Addiction.

The groups Bo is recomending PSSC , IPS, and nurseries, actually FEED your addiction. While both groups  AA and IPS can be helpful to the afflicted individual. They work in entirely different ways, AA promotes abstience, while the IPS and nurseries promote full blown involment, participation, and degeneration into your addiction!  :D

I encourage you to plant more palms.  Soon you can feed your addiction by giving your neighbors palms that won't fit in your yard and then you are really addicted when you start to commando plant palms throughout all of So Cal.

Bienvenidos!

Believe me, you're not alone. a very similar scenario here. Two years ago i couldn't i.d. a Queen palm. Then we moved into a new house and i wanted to know what variety the two types of palm in the garden were. ( aforementioned Queens plus Livistona australis).

now I have over 30 species and am planning on adding more!

This forum is a great place to lurk, I can't add much yet, in fact I don't even what questions to ask but it's still informative and entertaining.

Oh, now it might be early for us to share those kinds of secrets.  How do I know you are not MY wife in disguise.  She is very smart.   Hummmm.  I don't know about this.

What I will say is that I learned from a very smart person years ago is that "it is better to beg forgiveness, than ask permission"

Cel, if you are reading this, it wasn't me I promise.  It was an imposter, now wait, look what I bought you honey.  Isn't it beautiful

Oh man, am I in trouble.   Joe, look what you have done.

Just kidding.  I have co-opted my wife into my addiction.  She even gives me some hits too, from time to time.

Hi Joe,

I got into palms in a similar way to you, at about the same time in my life (with young kids, first house, started a new landscaping project...the rest is history).  Regarding the wife, there have been some good suggestions in other threads.  If she's into fruit trees, get her a Butia (the fruit is really good), if she likes orchids, tell her that once the palms start trunking you can attach orchids to them.  But I think in the end, the threat of other hobbies that you could take up, like motorcycles, drugs, gambling will usually quiet her pretty quickly.

Try paying for your palms in cash. Every time you go to the store or use your ATM card take out $20. Pretty soon your Secret Palm stash will be overflowing.

Hi Joe.

The sooner you come to terms with the fact that palms are more important than your wife the better off you will be. The only way they will both fit comfortably in your life is if you get her hooked too. Then you can use xmas, her birthday and valentines day as a reason to buy more palms. Get your kids hooked early- more birthdays, more palms.

Good luck.

Thanks for the great advice...

I think once I get all the potted palms into the ground, it will be easier to get more.  Some of the members here have amazing yards, and that always helps when the wife is concerned.  She is very keen on aesthetics...

welcome to the nut house.

seems to me you have two options ;

1.  get your wife involved in your palm purchases.

B.  learn to spot a good deal on womens handbags or shoes and offer up a trade off.   I am sorry if I have offended anybody with this suggestion, but it works for me.

It's pretty hard to hide the new palms you come home with.

Just get used to the bemused looks ???  Destroy the price tags and say they were on sale- a real bargain.

My wife is more concerned I'm spending time on an internet "chat room"

Joe,

Well, the PSSC has another meeting coming up in about a month's time. I don't have the details, but I'm sure someone in SoCal can fill us in with the date and location. I know plenty of PSSC members have young children...don't put your life on hold until they're grown...! :P
