In the last vacation at the beach of Paraná I traveled to the city of Santa Catarina called Corupá. to see one of the largest private collections of palms and to meet its owner, Mr.Giulio Giacomozzi. Corupá is located in the State of Santa Catarina, latitude 26 º 25'31 south and longitude 49 º 14'35" west, with an altitude of 75 meters. The city is considered Santa Catarina´s capital of ornamental plants and orchids. It´s located at 76m altitude ,close to the sea but surrounded by high mountains of the Serra do Mar, making the climate a warm subtropical one . Medium temperatures are 20ºC and can reach 40ºC . Mr Giulio already in his eighties has a collection of over 600 species of Brazilian palm trees and from other countries. He served as professor of Portuguese at the university level. Now he is retired and can finally enjoy his beloved garden and palmetum that´is in fact a big Park. He is often consulted by several botanical gardens in Brazil because of his vast knowledge about various species. The habit of his in-laws to plant a tree at every birth of a son or daughter, was also passed to the Giacomozzis who began to plant a palm tree for each new child. This way began a love for palm trees and just torn up a collection. Mr Giulio is a nice kind person . His eyes are vivid specially when describing each palm, its origin, etc. At his age he still works and was pushing a little car with fallen palm fronds to the compost heap when I arrived at his place. I brought with me my last Tahina spectabilis and donated it to the collection. Mr Giulio was really very happy. It was like a child who gets a lollipop! This palm made my year, he said and gave it a kiss. It was a great joy to give this pleasure to a person who really knows the intrinsical value of each palm for its beauty and botanical interest and really loves them. He still germinate all kind of palms and he gave me seedlings of Ceroxylon ventricosum, Brahea sarukhani and a nice Chamaedorea fragrans plant. There aren´t much palm enthousiasts near here, but certainly this counts for ten!Congratulations Mr. Giulio! Keep up the good work!!!Muito obrigado!
