The trunk looks Sylvester-like.

Hmm.  Could be either sylvestris or lourerii.

Kris, can you give us a full shot of the whole plant, or failing that, a couple of combined shots of the crown and the trunk?

Dear folks  :)

in india we do not have Sylystersis, think i got that spelling

right.all we have is the one seen in rarepalmseeds.com

variety_its the Loureirai or indian mountain date palm..

the local call it the Echa Maram, and the fruits are edible, but

not to the quality of majdool dates from N.africa & middle east.

I knew preety well that all phoenix lovers will certainly respond to this thread. And Max,Robbin & dave you guys are

regular so your interaction did not surprise me at all.. :)

And as the fruits mature and when the seeds are ready for

cleaning and packing i will PM you & others who have asked

for these seeds earlier. And i will seed these seeds free,

but the priority will be based on how much you guys love

the phoenix Sp.and willing to experiment in your climatic

conditions.lets pray that i harvesh plenty of those seeds,

and wish it does not rain till harvest. :)

Dear Max & Robbin i think i have answered your question.

And Dear Dave_My Buddy.i will try to post what angle you

have asked.but if you want to see those palms, right away

then please go to kris garden welcomes you thread.

you will see lots of this & other date palms in many angles

there.

and i wish to say that this phoenix is not green or silver, ash

in colour but mild blueish in colour the still from the digital

camera does not do any justice.and its a very fast grower.

and i have trimmed the leaves heaviely because i wanted

you all to see the seeds clearly.and the next season i will

have to employ proffessional climbers to do the job.

as my ladder cannot reach the desired height.  ???

Thanks & Love,

Kris  :)

Dear folks

some bad news, there was a sudden bust of rain fall 2 weeks

ago and this happens when the mercury starts to go up !

but many of the phoenix young seeds started to fall even

without becoming big ? and the fruits are also without

hard seeds.this is preety new to me_since this is the 3rd time

its fruiting.but in the preivous occassions we had a rip fruit and a hard seed.and where ever the seeds fell.there were new phoenix sprouts like weeds.

here are the still for you to follow what is happening here !

Dear Guys_Thank you very much for those inspiring words. :)

dear max my only worry here is that for the past 2 years are so,we used to sweep clean the foot of this phoenix tree

which had plently of rock solid seeds all had gone waste.

since its not very popular here in s.india.

but now i wish to send it as gifts to phoenix lovers world wide

its behaving preety merky(i meant the climate & the palm).

dear derek_i honestly do not know what variety it is,but looks

more bluiesh to our eyes that silverish.

dear zac_iam very glad that you like it.and i was of the opnion that you love the fan palms more that the feather

palms(Phoenix type).it is clear now that all members of our

forum are true palm lovers_irrespective of the palm variety.

dear Ronnie_its nice to hear from you and i must say they

are not edible dates meaning that its more of hard seed &

less of fruit pulp.and the fruit ripes in its trunk itself.

the colour of the fruit is dark brown colour in matt finish

and turns black & falls to the ground.

this veriety can grow to 50 to 60 feet high effortlesly in

a span of 15 to 18 years in our hot climate.

and they usually die due to lightning stricks and does not have any seceptibality to nutrition diffecency, insect attack

or beetles...

if this palm is properly fed with your type of fertz it will grow like a jamboo, but no idea on cold tolerance, that is the aspect we will have to experiment now !  :D

Thanks and i will keep you guys informed on this front.

Love,

Kris  :)

Dear Rubyz  :)

hey iam not an expert on palm identification.and the phoenix

that is in our house garden is seeds gathered from the wild.

as i was travelling on our highways i found this vierity

disturbing my concentration, since our outskirts are full of this palm.so i stopped my car and began collecting the seeds.

many did germinate very easily and were given away to friends

who still have it in pots like i have some.but i think none of

them were grounded.

so i do not know what variety i have.and the huge pit which was

initially dug for CIDP was given away to this local phoenix.

if given an option that i have to fell this tree to make

space to CIDP or Bizie Lady i will do it myself.

since i do not wish to grow the common varities or those

which my neighbours grow.

So that's how it is here on my side. :)

Love,

Kris  :)

You definitely have a Phoenix sylvestris, once thought to be the progenitor of the true date (dactylifera), but now recognized as a distinct species. THe best, most recent monograph on Phoenix is by Sasha Barrow, published by Kew in Britain. The variable Phoenix loureirii has red fruit, also occasionally marginally edible like sylvestris. I must say it is a stunning specimen. We have very few true, pure P. sylvestris in California, unfortunately.

Dear Bob  :)

that information is very useful, since i did not know what

species i had at my home garden !

and as you said my phoenix puts out fruits that are dark

brown colour,and not red fruits.

so you have got a point !

and glad you like it,thanks for those useful info's on our
