Hello at all!

I am new here since yesterday - first of all: Please apologise my english, but my mother language is german --> please speak slowly with me, so I can understand you   - and I hope you will understand me, too

I am married with Heli, we have 3 grown-up children, 1 boy, 2 girls and 5 grandchilds.

My husband and I like to travel to foreign countries (last year we visited Simona in Amman - you can believe me - it was great! :D ) and diving in the sea;

we live in a small village near Salzburg/Austria - USDA 5b - unfortunatelly very cold, much snow in winter and not sooo warm in summer - and much rain inbetween

My hobby and passion is to collect palmtrees and other exotic plants - though here in Salzburg it is not possible to let them grow outdoor during winter - I thinkI have about 500 pots (litte and bigger one) :D

Have a little view in my "summer - garden" - these fotos are not all plants :D :D

A part of my "nursery" in summer:

The grown ups:

In the end of October I have to carry all plants in die cellar (with light for plants) - those, who like it warm all over the year, are the whole year in the wintergarden ore carried in October inside.

Welcome to Palmtalk!!

This is a very informative and friendly forum. No question is too stupid to ask (and I have asked a couple of those).

Nice to see someone who is passionate about exotic plants and palms.

I see that growing tropicals is a bit of a challenge for you but it looks like you have a pretty impressive collection just the same.

Have fun with the forum.

Oh yeah-- please show us more pictures of your collection-- everybody loves pictures

You won't be surprised to meet some familiar faces here also: Sandra, Markus and Verena are just some.

So, we are not alone and I hope that soon enough, we are going to be so many- in need to open a German subforum here in Palmtalk :P

That's quite an impressive winter setup.

THere are a lot of people who who could give you their practical advice on which palms and plants will survive your winters.

No sense in risking it when others can share information based on what they've tried.

WELCOME! That's quite a setup. It's interesting to see just what someone has put up with to grow plants in unhospitable climates. I guess living in South Florida has me spoiled. Keep up the good work. :D Randy

Moni,

Welcome to the PalmTalk Forum! You have quite a collection there and a very impressive set-up. And I love Salzburg - have been there a few times (many years ago!). But not the ideal place for palm growing...!

Even though you've already had quite a few responses here in the Ohana Nui Off-Topic Forum I'm moving your thread to Discussing Palm Trees, where we typically have introductions, and where you are likely to get even more replies.

Welcome to the forum! My wife is from the Czech Republic and we always visit my mother-in-law there every year. It gets extremely cold and I am surprised and amazed that you are growing palms there! Cheers to you! I've been trying to get her into palms since she doesn't mind bringing all her plants in during the winter. I am glad there are a few brave and determined palm lovers in Europe. :D

"coconut" is a word, which makes me very sad  I had a pretty coconut-palm (I brought the nut 2006 from Kenia) - and the palm grew very well.

This WAS my palm in August 2008

.... then, after the holidays at Jordan in September/October 2008, she was dead  - a few days it was too cold in the wintergarden (only 5°C) - in this time I lost many exotic plants

This post grabbed my attention because perhaps it's a better system of organizing photos that what I use. I've been maintaining a chronological system with a cross reference of each species and its location for thousands of plant photos. I'll have to rethink that. Thanks for the idea!

I visited Salzburg briefly in 2001. What a beautiful area and it felt almost tropical in the summer. It was very rainy and humid compared to our dry summers.
