I have six of these wonderful palm seeds and the first has just popped. What size tap root can I expect? I have my Bizzies in 18" tubes and wondered if the same would do. Any advice on cultivating P. henryana from seed would be most welcome, as I haven't grown this palm before.

I am not an expert on this palm, but I have a large one...getting ready to fruit sometime soon, I hope. When I did plant this it was in a 18" cone planter.

I would think your Bizzie containers would suit this palm fine. It certainly can't hurt.

They do not seem to have a sinker . I bought one recently and it was just in a space saver pot ,, they are 20 cms high and only 10cms diameter . I potted up into larger . Here is a pic , and its already opened up that spike and growing well . I bought several others for growing on .

Bill,

I received these seeds from a fellow member on 28th July. They are in a box (see photo) with under-heating in the form of a light bulb on a timer. Highs of around 34°C (93°F) for maybe an hour a day in the afternoon when it gets fairly steamy. The average daytime temperature maybe 30°C (86°F) and at night it doesn't fall below 20°C (68°F). A couple of times a week I mist the seeds by hand. The first one took exactly ten weeks. I just remembered I have ten - not six of these. I'll be happy if three or more sprout.

I'm glad you're seeing some growth... I have, on the other hand, only seen a growth in my lack of patience!

Hang in there, Bill! How about throwing a sheet of clear polythene over those crates? Would that get too hot?

Posted

Definately wouldn't get too hot... maybe not a bad idea. I read that these can take upto a couple years to germinate...

Been growing these for 4-5 years and the palm basically grows fast, if keep in low winds, high humidity and heat.....loves tropical river gorges. Ran across some monsters in habitat back in 1982 in Fiji.

Took some pics....it was too dark in the gorge for film!

Thanks, Michael. That gives me a good indication.
