Dead Palm Leaves --Whaddya do with yours?

Featured Replies

Howdyall:

A random trip through my garden.

Palms growing, and, shedding leaves, in some cases LOTS of them.

Here's a Roystonea regia, with dead leaves all round, some from the Trachy next to it, that big green tube is its own abscissed leaf.

When they're all dry, they make GREAT kindling in my two fireplaces. . . . .

That is a great photo Dave, one of your best, and the word you're looking for could be "verdant". Down in the valle, Vaughn vies for a verdant vista with a view to planting a Veitchia vanguard.

Re: Dead Leaves ? I used to keep them as mulch floor but have decided to remove them from the jungle all together by way of regular green bag hire, quite cheap.

Dave,

Wal has it, and the Spanish for green [incidentally] is "verde". Is that a special "thinkers" chair in the middle of your jungle? We've only a couple of Washies. I burn the leaves after a few months on the bonfire heap.

Dave, don't SO CA communities have garden waste pickup? We do in Cape Coral. We carry dead fronds, etc. to the side of the street for weekly removal. I thought verdant CA communities would have similar setups.

As a side note, back in the mid-20th century, everyone in CA burned their garden refuse in the back yard (something forbidden in suburban Washington, DC). The smoke could be smelled for blocks. As a 5-year-old I visited northern CA and remember the practice well. Even years later, I'd catch a whiff of burning vegetation and think, "Smells like California." How times have changed.

Well, not much. I live in a rural area and burn what is do big for the compost bin. The ashes are used to amend the soil.

Dave, I suppose outdoor burning of anything is not an option in California for obvious reasons.

In my post I sometimes express "my" opinion. Warning, it may differ from "your" opinion. If so, please do not feel insulted, just state your own if you wish. But indoor burning is . . . . .

Which I do, plus I put the dead leaves on the compost pile, and bury them in the ground.

Dave, In your case mulching is great except the pile gets huge. I guess you could get some heavy suntin to put on top to push 'em down and speed up the process? The resulting mulch is great to put back on palms.

I do it like the Doors song. You know which one I'm talking about? Wal, could you provide the lyrics?
