One of the oldest Hardware/Construction Supplier's in this area today is Lainhart and Potter. Great people. Beyond the newspaper article, word goes that the wreck of the Providencia was actually done intentionally for an Insurance scam.It occurred on a very tranquil day and the ship had was also well stocked with alcohol. Apparently, a rather torrid week long party ensued and the Cocoanuts were purchased for less than a nickel a piece.

Thereafter, the little area of Cocoanuts prospered and the locals decided to form a Township. The first choice was Palm City but that name was already taken.The second choice of Palm Beach would have to do.

Did that article say 1869. All other accounts I have read said 1879.
