The 37-acre grounds began as a nursery run by Ralph Kinton Stephens in 1882.  Mr. Stephens wined and dined ship captains coming into port in Santa Barbara to persuade them to bring him seeds from their journeys around the world.  The oldest palms and trees on the grounds were planted during his time here.

The fifth and final private owner of the property, beginning in 1941, was a Polish opera singer and great beauty, Madame Ganna Walska.  She gained wealth through a succession of marriages, one to Mr. MacCormick of Internationa Harvester fame, and later in life focused her energies on creating what she hoped would become a world-recognized botanic garden.

Being of the theater, she liked grand entrances:

Her personal touches are everywhere, including this glass slag from the Arrowhead Water bottling company used as edging in the tropical garden:

Clivia miniata was in bloom throughout the grounds:

One of her last and grandest efforts was the cycad garden.  It is said she sold her jewelry for a million dollars in order to finance the development of the garden and acquisition of the rare and expensive cycads.

Her most prized specimens are the Encephalartos woodii:

The cactus garden is a recent addition, 2003 if I remember correctly.  Tons of soil suited for cactus were hauled in, as well as natural basalt columns, and many tons of black shale for mulch to absorb the heat of the sun.

Your pics beat mine, that's for sure!

Hmm.  Who took the pics of you and your DH up in St. Babba?

But you missed the 60 foot tall Howeas . . . . :(

But that's okay, 'cause when I get up there, I'll get them!

Dave, I recall you mentioning 60-ft Howeas, don't know how I missed them, but I did, and I was looking.  Where are they???  Those I saw may have been 30-40ft.

Daughter, student at UCSB, took our pic.  She is in the dragon tree photo.
