Hi

Got today a call from somebody from USA about this topic,  he wanted to have some info about what i was growing here in Belgium so  I promised him a reply

we live here in zone 8a wet and cold winters and wet summers ...

when we moved here i started to plant my personal collection in the back garden  in 2008 i am going to do the front garden , so I expect a lot off fun in 2008

in my personal collection i have here trachys trachys and trachys , some butias, chamaerops , jubaea, r. hsyrix, sabal and in a very protected spot some chamaedorea radicalis

Also some phoenix palms but they receive full cover in winter

For the moment it is here outside -4°C

so i hope the winter is soon gone  brrr...

Here area few pictures from California that I took in October. These palms are growing at my nursery in Deluz (Fallbrook area) Northeast corner of San Diego County.

Butia archeri, about 15 year old . This is a mature plant.

  Your home looks like it would fit in Wai`anae.  What I mean is the bars on your windows.  Do you have worries of people breaking in?  A lot of homes here have similar bars because of the bad drug problem here w/many breakins in some neighborhoods.

Bought this in a 1 gal. container from a local Palm Society sale years back and finally got it in the ground about 4 years ago and it's really a happy camper. The tag said Trithrinax acanthacoma, but I think the new name is brasiliensis. Gotta watch the spines and leaf tips though, pretty unforgiving.

Now I've done it.  I now have about a dozen impossible to obtain "must have" palms swimming in my head.

James Belgium - Awesome palms and an even more awesome garden --and in Belgium to boot!  I agree with Jeff its definitely very tropical in feel.

JDA - Butia archeri is amazing - a natural bonsai!  And I like the Braheas too.  I only have brahea armatas no and they are still tiny.

Eric - I don't even know where to begin.

Eric, nice shots from the Leu! I hope my Beccariophoenix looks like that some day. All the palms look extremely healthy. It's always more enjoyable looking at palms I have chance at growing.

Matt, this is a good question it, seems that these critters have a taste preference. Most of the palms that I plant have to be protected with wire cages. It's quite the challenge to keep gophers, rabbits and ground squirrels from destroying our plants. We're lucky that deer don't come in.

 That Butia archeri is nice and I guess is really slow. I can't quite tell from the picture, but how tall is the palm? It's too wet here to grow these.

As promised, lets just start with one for now.

This one's a true Hydristele no true name a 'sp'

no name, not sure if one's being connected to this

palm yet, the first shot what she looks like

This has the old tag on.(H. 'sp' via Bogor B/gardens)

Wow the entire leaf is super thick, This plant is a clumper

& in ground gets larger. I've removed  the suckers to

get more of this one.

Now 2nd shot, it's about to flower again ,thats what I'm pointing at ,another collector (Arden Dearden) has one

the same size plant with set seed just on,(Very young set)

I'm sure theres guys out there that must have this plant

come on show guys show som other sise's

Wow Mikey that Hydriastele is a beauty.  Looks like a cross between a Pelagodoxa Henryana and a Sommeria Elegans -- and its a clustering palm!!  That must turn out to be a very impressive specimen.

I love it...  Jeff I think since we (palmophiles) are so engrossed with our love for the rare and unusual we get our reailty skewed...  Take a drive down any neighborhood built in the last 25 years and look around at what is planted...  Your whole shadehouse is full of super duper rarities!   :cool:  Pseudophoenix sargentii is a local around here, but when was the last time you saw one on the average front yard?

    The first, a Copernicia (?) looks great. Is it C. rigida, or maybe a C. cowellii ? Come on, keep them coming! I know you got some good size Carribbean stuff, things that are not seen very often.
