steve 9atx 2 Report post Posted May 23, 2007 An invite for our South African friends to sound off. I can't picture some of these locales with snow! How are your palms fairing? http://www.capetimes.co.za/index.php?fArticleId=3844594 Steve
PalmsZA 18 Report post Posted May 24, 2007 Hi Steve It is freezing cold through many parts of the interior....On the East coast we had plenty wind and cooooooold days like we have never seen in our lifetime (15c). Certain places on the South coast recorded their coldest ever daytime temps, around 9c! The past few mornings have been at around 6c and dry as anything at my place, all the palms still look good but we cant have much more of this or the Verschaffeltiii's and Phoenicophoriums will be drying up! 21 people have died from exposure or smoke inhalation, people here are just not used to this sort of cold nasty weather.....our 6c is normally our lowest low towards the end of July not May!!! Oh well.......looks like I may be doing some replanting come sept! Cheers Dennis
Daryl 1,501 Report post Posted May 24, 2007 Whoa! that is pretty savage weather. We just had our first cold snap of the season, and with 7 days till the start of winter, it got down to 10C at home last night. The forecast looks promising though! Hope your weather warms up Dennis. bubba 1,263 Report post Posted May 24, 2007 Dennis, Please tell me that your incredible Pigfetta filaris is fine. I believe it is the highest latitude (30) in the world for this variety.

Tyrone 1,992 Report post Posted June 1, 2007 How's the weather now Dennis. I just checked the weather threads and can't believe the temps you're recording. We haven't had anything belong 17C max yet. 15C for you guys is unbelievable. We had 23C today and it's the start of June. Coldest night so far has been a 4C, but the garden hasn't seen below 7C. Everything is still pushing spears including Hydriastele's. I hope everything warms up for you. Hopefully the generally warm days you get will counteract your cold nights you've had. Best regards Tyrone
philinsydney 61 Report post Posted June 1, 2007 Given that the frontal systems travel from W to E, perhaps we can expect this cold weather in a week or so. They say that bad weather in New York reaches England about a week later.
Tyrone 1,992 Report post Posted June 1, 2007 (wrigphi @ Jun. 01 2007,06:54)QUOTEGiven that the frontal systems travel from W to E, perhaps we can expect this cold weather in a week or so. They say that bad weather in New York reaches England about a week later. Theirs a high which is stuck in the bight at the moment which will be there for about a week and pump up to 1041hPa. Cold air for the east and warm NE for the west. After that a few cold fronts but no real rain or massive cold front systems forecast until at least mid June. This is a real worry for the west. We've just been through an incredibly dry winter last year and June which is meant to be our wettest month looks like being a dry and warm one. Good for palms, but not good for Dams, underground water supplies etc. It is unprecedented in recorded history since the 1880's to have a dry ElNino one year, and have an equally dry following year. I hope this year doesn't set a new pecedent. Water restrictions may be almost 3rd world conditions this summer for Perth. We need rain. regards Tyrone
philinsydney 61 Report post Posted June 1, 2007 Some scientists were saying that warmer temps in the Indian Ocean were causing dry conditions in southern Australia. Perhaps global warming is real? (I've never really considered the drought to be related to global warming, but you never know)
