I've got mine in deep shade and is growing really good. It has survived Central Florida's extreme weather, but in a very protected spot. There is a 150 year old live oak tree hovering over this palm.

Hi Dave -

I have one here in Fallbrook that gets at least half day, unobstructed summer sun and it seems to be doing ok. It's been in the ground for about a year now and besides the normal acclimation process taking it's toll on it, I'd say it's going to be a great palm for me. I planted it as a good sized 5 gallon.

Mine is in 3/4 day sun here on the coast. It has been in the ground for almost two years and is taking the sun OK. It doesn't seem to like the cold much and looks like crap by the end of winter. It might do better with canopy.

Hey Dave,

You and I share the same Mayotte from Jerry. I think we are only about 5-6 miles from eachother. I have one in full sun and doing fine for summer and incredibily well for winter even with the crazy 30 degree temps. The other i have had in 1/4 day sun and it now has another shoot coming up. Both are about the same with the exception of the shoot which is about 20 inches tall.

Dypsis sp Mayotte doesn't exist ...

There are 2 species of Dypsis in Mayotte : Dypsis lanceolata & Dypsis cabadae.

I was there last week and i saw those 2 species. :)

I'm sure, and i'm not the only one, that there are no other species of Dypsis in Mayotte

This explains why my "sp mayotte" always looks like crap. I can't grow either of those palms.

The reason you can't grow a D. Sp. Mayotte is because it doesn't exist, per Oliver..the entire time you were trying to grow a D. Maylancabadae...

My alleged D. Mayotte looks like a hybrid...cabadae base color lanceolata leaf type...go figure...

I grew a Dypsis Mayotte in Riverside, CA (Zone 9b) with no problem. It is DEFINITELY not Cabadae (withstood the cold) and the leaflets weren't lanceolate like D. lanceolata. It is either a hybrid between the two or a new species.

Well, for what it's worth, I'm not discounting the possibility of anything among Madagascar palms.

They multiply like rabbits, etc., and evolve with lightning speed.

So, respectfully, I'll avoid judgment on doctrine about what species are here, there, etc., or how many species are in this or that spot.

Respectfully.

It always ends like that...Just when you think you have it pinned down...Someone pulls the rug out from under you...I will trust those in the know as well...I have never named a plant myself...all of my plants were giving names by the growers...

Your plant base color is wrong for a lancelota...and the leaf type is wrong for a cabadae...I defer...

Mine is definitely alive, but still hasn't acclimated after 2 years. After this winter it has one good leaf left. It experienced 30-31F for 5-6 hours one night, and barely scraped 32F three other nights. I'll plant it later this spring, see if it likes being in the ground better. It looks about as unhappy as my Spindle Palm.

My D. pembana looks great so far, actually much better than leptocheilos and lutescens. It also will go in the ground this spring.
