That's astonishing beautiful!

When I was in Oman recently, I was given 2 bags of dates by my client. They were red, extremely sweet and full of syrup. I was told the dates were completely natural and were the priciest dates available locally. My research indicates they probably originated in Iraq but I was told they were local to Oman.

I have about a hundred or so seeds if anybody is interested in a few.

I believe the variety is "Khastawi". If you google for images of this, quite a few will show up - mostly in Palestine. If you get your hands on some, you will have great difficulty believing they are not some kind of processed candy!

Hai Luis, I started a new topic about Phoenix dactylifera with goldenyellow rhachis. Are you familiar with it? I have seen it on the beach just west of Puerto Banus Marbella, in the harbour of Benalmadena (just opposite a bike-rental) and in a small village between Elche and Allicante. I think it was Torrelano. The young palm is in a public planting along the westside of Avinguda de Segarra, just opposite a cafetaria. Maybe you can take a look in Benalmadena? I am very interested in getting some young plants of this variety. I will try to upload some photo's, but up to now, I was not succesfull in doing so.

Wim Takken.

Lois, here is a photo of the variety I am looking for.

That looks like Iberica or Theophrastii.... Iberica produces edible dates, Theo doesn't as far as I know. Jv

Thanks Jv; Phoenix iberica is new to me. Does anyone in Europe know this species and -more important to me- where young plants are for sale?

I know of one place in Germany - due to the rules regarding palm suppliers I have sent you a private message.

Part of the vendors description reads:

Ihre wichtigste Besonderheit sind die leuchtend gelben oder orangenen Blattstiele

For those that don't read German:

Their most important characteristic arw light gold or orange petioles.

You might try Spain as I understand it is suppose to be the date palm that is native to that region.... someone must be selling them there. Best of luck, let us know if you find a source. Jv
