Picture updated today (November 12, 2010). The Phoenix hybrid that most likely is a cross between robelenii and rupicola is still growing slowly and looking good.

I love the look of that Phoenix. Do you think it is slow because of the shade?

Partially because of the shade, but also because both parents are not particularly speedy anyway.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Very pretty and it doesn't appear to have many spines on its petioles. I've never seen that Phoenix cross before and I sure wouldn't mind a palm like that in my own yard.

I obtained it from an old-time nursery guy about 20 years ago. He had grown fond of it, and it took a lot of persuading to get him to sell it to me.

I really like the look of this particular hybrid! Definitely the most tropical looking phoenix.

Very pretty Phoenix...i have a reclinata X rupicola (or reversed, not that i know) and the deep green drooping foliage is very tropical.

Thanks for posting!

Tom, I remember that palm. That's got to be my favorite Phoenix cross. I'm sure you've also grown fond of it and that it would take much persuading before you'd ever let it go too! Very nice palm!

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!
