I'm with you Jasonblink.gif , I did a double check on the location through a Google search to verify the location was Brazil . You know, like S. Amer Brazil. Didn't know it snowed there. This is another reason I've always been fascinated by geographical locations on world maps.

I grew up in tropical africa and spent most winters wrapped in ponchos and huddled around the heaters and fireplace. Tropical locations can get very cold, Mt Kilamanjaro is on the equator and its always covered in snow. Interesting topic Alberto, I knew arucarias were cold hardy but I didnt realise they could take snow as well.

Alberto,

Thanks for the picture. I see the people on the news wearing warm clothing and it is such a contrast to the weather here. This is the Amazonian summer and yesterday the street side temperature signs were reporting 40 C in some places around town. It is a bit cooler today I think it stayed around 34 C because it rained around noon. Brazil is a big country for sure.

Sorry to hear this! Isn´t T.schyzophilla a hardy palm....

Here in South central Paraná a thick cloud cover formed with humity from the Atlantic Ocean, are making our temperatures somewhat warmer at night. 5°C,but lack of sunshine makes that the temperatures during the day aren´t confortable (7°C)

Three times I saw some snow here in my city,so it is very rare here!

Peachy,Our native Araucaria angustifolia is only slightly less cold hardy then Araucaria araucana from Chile. But I saw some planted out in Holland, surviving well....

Hi Ben,

The sun appeared again here today and the temperaure was better, but with the clear sky tonight.... I think it will freeze.

Daytime temperatures aren´t this cold generally. Only if very cloudy. I remember that some years ago it snowed a little here in Carambeí the first of May (during the day) and tempertures were around 0°C.

Hmm.

Looks like those auracarias are up in some serious altidude, almost a mile high.

That's certainly below the Tropic of Capricorn, and I know it can get cold down there.

(Go far enough south and you hit Antarctica . . . . )

So, is snow a regular event there? It appears not to be, given the lack of serious winter clothing, though no one's running around like at Mardi Gras time . . . :)

Dave,

Brazilians make a big deal of cold weather. It is not something that most have to deal with. So, many go just to experience it. The coldest weather clothes that I have is a tropical wool sport coat. Which does not do much good. In fact I had it on when I was boarding a small plane in Great Falls, Montana last December with a temperature of 30 below zero F. I thought I was going to freeze solid. You will never see a temperature in Brazil like that and if people had to experience it I doubt if they would pay to do it. It was so cold that the flight attendants hand stuck to the metal lever used to close the cabin door and she screamed with pain as it burned her skin as she pulled loose from the frozen metal.

Now living in a house with no heating in freezing or near freezing weather is far from comfortable. When I lived in São Paulo years ago I used to wear my long johns from Montana at home to stay warm in the winter. And, São Paulo never gets as cold as further south. The one thing that I really do not miss is cold weather. But, then again that is a personal judgement. I am quite content to only have to deal with the heat.

We're getting clear nights around 5C the same as you, but are you saying the days have maxed at 7C!!!!! That's cold. I've been whinging about temps 10-12C warmer than that here. I guess I should be thankful.

That reminds me of the movie "Dumb and Dumber", when Jim Carie licks a frozen metal hand rail in Aspen. I think that's what happened anyway. :D
