We were buried under 26" of snow here, just east (11 miles) of Washington, DC. Digging out was a real chore...until the guy with the Bobcat showed up. :) (More pix http://home.comcast.net/~tjswebpix/Blizzard2010/'>here.)

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

I just added on photos to Tom's thread at the Hardy Palm Forum, so why not do it here, too?

But I'll start off with a new one of interest: a special cold-hardy Lipstick Palm:

Wow. Makes me (almost) homesick for my old Virginia home. I've lived through a number of storms like that one.

My son who lives in Rockville, Md. is currently marooned in Minnesota. He was supposed to fly home Sat. to spend a couple days with his wife & baby before flying to the Netherlands for a seminar. But all the airports in the Baltimore-Washington corridor closed on Fri. Now he hopes to fly home Mon., repack his suitcase & depart for the Netherlands the same day - if the airports reopen Mon. Washington area has more snow than Minnesota - by far - with another 5+ inches expected Tues. What a winter. And if it gets much colder in Cape Coral I expect some flurries.

Zone - a wacked-out place between 9b & 10

Mark:

Yeah, you guys caught a biggie!

Reminds me of the winter of '77-78 and '78-79, nasty, lots of snow and cold, too.

But, the snow protected tender plants from the cold while stems sticking up above were blasted.

Please keep us apprized as to how you do. This is super-important stuff in palmdom. You guys are on the cutting edge.

I'm reminded why I moved to California . . . .

That looks cold for sure.If that lipstick was really outside it would be turned to mush.

I don't recall seeing a palm buried in that much snow! How much snow is DC going to see this year? I think theres another big storm on the horizon.

Yep. We could get 5+ inches more between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon. Ugh.

Update: 5-10". <sigh>

I took a little poetic license. Actually, the high soared to almost 60 yesterday. But it was 42 this morning, not too far removed from flurry temps.

Great shots Mark! Doesn't even look like VA at times does it? lol! I have a thread on the winter side that I mostly started just to make those down south feel "warm" compared to our recent cold, but it turned into my blizzard 2010 thread. Its over on the "weather / climate" side and is loaded with pics. I wont post any here since Ive posted quite a few already, and a link to my web album over there. Hope your palms are doing ok!!!! Here is a link to that thread: Click here for more blizzard of 2010 photos

Mark, do you have an Plumeria, and if so , did you ever give cuttings to anyone?

Oh no, they upgraded us. I posted it in the thread linked above. Its a winter storm warning now for 12-20 MORE INCHES of snow tues thru wed evening. Will it ever end?

BTW. I grew up in bowie. Grades 6-12, Rockledge, Ogle, then graduated from Bowie High School. :)

It's the 80" on the road-sides, and the single-lane (plowed) roads, that make life difficult.

Some pictures from the sequel - about an additional foot or so. They are now talking about yet another possible storm on Monday. <sigh> Difficult to believe there are actually palms that can withstand this stuff. (Please send sunshine and warmth!)

It doesn't look like its going to be melting all that fast looking at the forecast... I wonder how Bobby in NY is doing (is that the right name????) with all this snow. I hear DC is getting waaaay more than NYC.
