Very nice butia, obviously its been well cared for. Butias can have thick trunks if they are well cared for. I also love the bluish tinge to the leaflets, a great specimen.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

Yeah, some Butes, as Sonorafans pointed out, can get huge, though never quite like a happy Jube.

I recall one that had a trunk about 3-4 feet (1 - 1.33 m) in diameter near Playa del Rey . . . . . (Loyola Marymount University.)

Hi.

I have a Jubaea, more taller, and with double the years and the perimeter of the trunk is smaller.

Hi.

could be that the jube isnt terribly happy, or that jubes start the trunk thickening process later in life. There are alot of variations in butia, more than any palm I know. A 2' diameter trunk with only 3-4' clear trunk is not abnormal.

Mauser,

Your beauty looks fantastic!!! Check out the thread that Jeff from Temecula started re: Strictor Butia,, or something like that. One way to tell if it has Jubaea would be and look if it has any thorns at the base of the petioles, if it does, then i would guess that you have a pure Butia, and a nice one at that!!!!! :)

Mark

I read all the earlier post on Strictor of Butia and also everything related to the hybridization.

The plant has almost no spines, only highlights the union of the petiole with the trunk fiber.

I think it has some percentage of Jubaea. I am impatient to see the color of the flower. How do you see for hybridization with Syagrus and Parajubaea?

Thanks to all

My large Butia X Jubaea has thorns along the petiole. The only way to be sure it's a hybrid with Jubaea is when it blooms. The spathes have rust colored tomentum and the flowers on mine are magenta. The N. Calif web has some pictures of it.

Dick,

Interesting. I have many BXJ and JXB and none of them have spines. I guess you learn something new everyday!!

Mauser,

Put that beauty in the ground asap and baby that sucker, in a few years you'll get your wish!!! It would make a FANTASTIC mother palm to some really cool hybrids!!! I find myself impatiently waiting too!!

Do you think, if it will need a lot of space on the soil? I see the leaves short. I am looking for the right place to plant. I too am impatient.

Thanks
