My largest foxy lady just dropped a leaf and exposed herself to the public. This palm was planted in August 2003 from a 15 gallon and has grown absolutly crazy for me. It now has about 13 feet of clean trunk and overall height of 25 feet. The base or foot is 58 inches in circumference. This palm is one of the fastest growing palms I have ever planted. I hope it produces viable seed, anyone out there know if this can happen? Here are some shots from today:

Bob,

The foxy lady has to be one of the very best palms for SoCal. Rumor has it that Jeff Marcus has gotten viable seed off of his foxy ladies. I already have a R. Chatham Island that came from your tree. Hopefully I can add a foxy lady some day as well. Aaron

P.S. The waves have been going off in S.D. the past few days.

Bob, the largest I have seen is at Rancho Soledad. It is fat and about 25 feet tall. But no flowers. So you might be the first in CA. I bought some from RSN in 2007 when the had the freeze sale. Got them for a steal but the damn things took 2 years to start growing and recovering. They literally started growing this late summer. Now they are fattening up and growing fast to include opening new leafs in winter. Good SoCal plant in my book.

I bought the same one from RSN. 1/2 off...good deal. I still have one freeze damaged frond that needs to be shed, otherwise it has grown a whole new canopy of fronds.

Yeah, we're all sterile over here. Must be the hot weather we get or our strong sunlight. That could be a good thing or a bad thing if you know what I mean.

Anyway, seriously, the foxy ladies appear to be mainly Veitchia arecina X Wodyetia in the US which are sterile, but in Oz, in the main, Foxy ladies are Veitchia joannis X Wodyetia which does produce viable seeds, but not in huge amounts. That's what I've heard anyway. In a few years I'll be able to say for certain. Mine are V joannis X Wodyetia and now have some size and put on about 1 metre of trunk annually. It won't be long and they'll be flowering. Then I need to make sure the flowers hold and then produce seed to maturity.

Best regards

Tyrone

Happ,

Is it the bawdy humour that amuses,or something else? :hmm:

I don't see why foxtails ,or foxyladys wouldn't do good out in southern California, but some have said they don't like CLAY soil?

I heard that they have more characteristic of the mother plant and won't put off foxyladys but I don't know much about it... crossing it with something else would be sweet... or back cross it with a foxtail or lady and try to get more characteristics of one or the other that would be sweet...
