Now thats an unusual sight! I couldn't believe it when I heard the news report snow in Texas and Louisiana. What freaky weather.

Best of luck with the recovery of your garden, hopefully the damage will only be temporary.

These Livistona decora should be fine.

This roebelenii will look bad until around July when it gets some new green leaves. And, the zamia below it should look funny for a while too.

post-158-1229038736_thumb.jpg

These microspadix will be just fine.

I don't know about this Bismarckia.

post-158-1229038789_thumb.jpg

This Carpentaria won't look too good, but the Caryota should be fine - it's still trying to recover from hurricane damage.

I haven't been watching the news and was caught off guard by the rare snow this morning - I didn't get a chance to protect anything. Everything should survive as the temperature didn't get below 37ºF, but several will have brown leaves in a few days.

Kathryn,

How often does New Orleans see snow accumulation? I would think it's a very rare occurrence. Btw, snow is pretty good insulator, much better than ice. So the damage might not be as bad as you would think.

Kathryn,

Beautiful photos,of course knowing that it is a screaming matter for palm lovers. We had snow here west of Houston also, however, not to the extent which shows up in your photos. It seems as if the heavy snowing started east of Houston, Liberty County had fairly heavy amounts.

Hope your lovely collection recovers for you without a problem.

Kate,

I envy you. At least you got to see the incredible site of your stuff covered in snow. I was out of town, so I'll get the damage only without even the small benefit of the cool snow covered scene.

Well, at least I did get some shots of other peoples stuff.

I spy an unfried banana leaf in your 4th photo posted! Looks like the stuff will be fine! What can possibly be more incongruent than snow on a Carpentaria?? I remember the snowstorm of 2004 and seeing Even some of the banana leaves in Gainesville, FL have fried, and I don't think we've had snow here since 1985!

I'm always up for learning new things!

Really cool pics! I can't believe it snowed in New Orleans like that.... Like the rest of the folks here think, I doubt that there will be much damage to your collection. Keep us posted though.

Ugh. I hate the white stuff. I may be one of the few folks here that doesn't find it beautiful. :bummed: That's more than we've had this season - so far, only a dusting. (We have hit 17.1°F though.)

A palm lover's worse nightmare. In fact, I have had nighmares about sleet and snow in South Florida on many occasions. If I wanted snow, I'd go north.

However, if any of you have ever flown from the Caribbean or South America, you realize just how far north of the equator we actually are!

I hope all recovers nicely,,,,and if not, come down to Ft. Lauderdale, stock up, and plant out again as I am certain this is a freak occurance there.

Kathryn, how long have you been growing that Pseudophoenix sargentii? How does it hold up in our weather? I have considered getting one in the past. Sorry to see all the snow made it your way also. We got even more of it here, almost 3 inches and this morning was 32F with heavy frost.

This is a surprising picture gallery. Thank you for sharing. I am unfamiliar with snow, so I always feel fascinated by pictures like these.

I also find some tropical palms are seldom seen "performing" through these conditions. I loved to see your group of Livistona decora and learn how the deeply divided segments easily shed the snow. Also nice to see the snow standing up in such a weird way on the upright leaf of your Bismarckia. Some in turn really looked sad, like Ptychosperma or Pritchardia.

I liked these sentences: :)

Kathrin, please keep these thread thriving and let us see the final effect of this in the future.

I hope most will come back. Snow is showy, while it is better than real cold.

Yuck. There but the grace of God go I. Jacksonville, New Orleans, and Houston have very similar climates. I think it's been 20 years since snow fell here. I hope I never see it! Let us know how those tropical species fare through the 37F (3C) low with snow accumultion. I bet most will be OK. You have an impressive collection!
