Awesome photos of the L. maldivica! Thank you for sharing them with us. I would love to get my hands on some viable seeds.

I am really looking forward to the IPS's meeting at Nong Nooch in 2012. Photos like these really inspire me to diligently save money for the trip!

Chanin,

My cousin and I visited Seychelles two years ago. It was a life altering experience for palm lovers. He and I were able to bring back 5 viable nuts. I kept three and he kept two. One of his died, the other one germinated. One of mine died, the other two, I still don't know.

What is remarkable about the fruiting d-coconut female, is that according to the folks in Seychelles, there are two or three places in the world OTHER than Seychelles, where females have fruited. Singapore Botanical Gardens, in Sri Lanka and in Thailand, as your pictures prove.

What is really cool about the male inflourences is that it smells like buttered pop corn. At least it did for my cousin and me. The Valle de Mai, is an absolute must visit for ALL palm lovers. It is our mecca. Also, notice that in the pictures both the male and female tree are not very tall, even though they get very tall. According to the locals, once the tree begins to trunk, then shortly there after does one find out whether the palm is a female or male. It just takes 20 to 40 years for the trunk to come !!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again. It brought back great memories.

Chanin, thanks for sharing those photos of that GREAT and beautiful palm at Nong Nooch. My climate would allow me to grow one of these palms. Now if only seeds were made available.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!
