maybe your caudex sneezed?  :D

No, but my little one is flushing right now.... looks like about 11 new leaves unless there are some wrapped up in the middle somewhere.  It will be interesting to watch this one grow and see if it exhibits the same features as the other, larger one I have.

Any updates on your hybrids Tracy? Please post some pictures. Would love to see how they look after a couple of months.

Last Monday 4/30/2018 the larger of the two.  I tried counting leaves on this flush when it was early in the push, but can't remember except that it was significantly more than the smaller one or the number of it's previous flush.  You can see how green the emerging flush is, with the blue color yet to come after these leaflets harden.

Thanks for the pics Tracy. Amazing hybrid for sure. With this last heat wave I am sure it will blue up sooner than later.

This is the smaller one that I had the problems with the mealy bug and scale on the emerging leaflets.  It did ok as a result of my picking them off carefully and using a high pressure spray to blast them off.  Still hardening off, so not showing the blue yet either, but it will.

Given the circumstances it looks great. That flush is just incredible. It looks like twice the amount of leaves compared to the last flush. Plus like u mentioned noticeably longer leaves as well. Definitely some hybrid vigor.

    • Do Sabal Hybrids Happen Often In The Wild? Does Anyone Grow Sabal Hybrids?
      By PalmTreeDude
Whenever I am somewhere where two Sabal species ranges intersect, I never seem to see any hybrids. For example, In South Carolina I will see Sabal palmetto with a bunch of Sabal minor at the base (and younger palmetto) but never see any hybrids. Do hybrids rarely happen? I would assume Sabals in habitats that intersected with one another would be a genetic mess, even though it is not really. Does anyone grow any Sabal hybrids or seen them happen? I am confused about the whole hybrid thing when it comes to palms. Sorry if this is a dumb question.
    • Encephalartos arenarius x woodii 7 years later
      By Tracy
I was looking at the new flushes on my Encephalartos arenarius x woodii as they near there full size and realizing how much this cycad has grown since I planted it.  I searched for photos of when I got the plant as a 15 gallon and found the one below pictured still in the pot.  The photo was February 2011 and I planted it within weeks of the photo being taken.  7 years later one of the pups would dwarf the caudex of the original 15 gallon plant.  The third pup is now flushing 5 leaves, while the larger pup has pushed somewhere in the high teens of new leaves.  I'm optimistic that I'll actually live to see this be a large cycad at this rate.  Chalk one up for hybrid vigor !
