Here is a preliminary cold damage to my personal palm collection. I live in Altamonte Springs, about 14 miles north of Orlando. Its a little colder than the metro Orlando area. My yard does have some good tree canopy in the back but this didn't make much difference with the winds. The first night of the freeze was 23F with 20-30mph winds all night and it was below 32F for over 10 hours. The 2nd night dropped to 28F but it was still with frost. This was the coldest freeze since the record Christmas 1989 freeze. It was also the first hard freeze with high winds the entire night.

@Eric in Orlando, this is great info especially with an update in a few months for survival reports (hopefully mostly survival).  Very similar temps to the event we experienced here in February 2021.  And with this event (like ours) there's a couple of surprises both positive and negative.  Is your Livistona saribus the green petiole form?

The next 10 days looks like solid warmth, day and night, so hopefully new growth will start pushing. A few things have. I am rather shocked my coconut is pushing growth after that brutal cold. I had already planned to put a nice ornamental striped sugarcane in its spot!

My L. saribus is a green petiole form. We do have several of the maroon forms at Leu and they did surprisingly well. It was 24-25F at Leu and they are showing no or very minor damage. In the past they had more damage at higher temps.

I believe that they are Jamaican Talls.

Nice to see that about Syagrus sancona. Any info on your Bactris sp. ? Especially the 2 hardy ones.

I dont have any at my house but a few at Leu Gardens. I will do an evaluation soon for those. I know B. gasipaes are 100% burned, not sure if trunks are putting out growth or if they got killed back to the roots.

Thanks. the hurricanes of 2004 and winter of 2009-10 helped start me to become unattached to the permanent status of plants in the garden, it is always in flux. I had a lot of risky palms for my area now it just opens up new plantings. But a lot more things have survived than I thought possible after a hard 23F with below freezing for over 10 hours. I will be replanting some tender palms but adding for hardy ones than before. I'm just glad by Cyrtostachys hybrid, Chelyocarpus chuco and Sabinaria survived with little or no burn with minimal coverings. And I am just floored my unintended coconut specimen is strongly pushing out new growth, hard to believe it would survive 23F.

My location: Windermere.

- 15-20ft foxtails - no protection. Complete defoliation. All recovering, pushing green. No bleeding trunks.

- Green Malayan dwarf 12ft - covered trunk and central spear with frost cloth, no heat. Complete defoliation. Recovering, two green fronds now.

- Two double P elegans 10ft - no protection. Against house. 1 double trying to recover. 1 killed.

- Triple christmas - covered with light cloth and tarp. No heat. Mild burn. Recovering well.

- Bottle 5ft - wrapped with frost cloth, no heat. Complete defoliation. Recovering well with 2 new fronds now.

- 3 royals R regia 8-9ft - no protection. Complete defoliation. Recovering well, 1-2 new fronds each currently.

Thank you for your update! Visited the Gardens recently. Very perplexing results and I’m sorry to hear/see the ones that didn’t make it. It’s surprising to me that clinostigmas, cocos, and licualas are surprisingly hardy.
