Should be easy enough to do, and I don’t think the it will suffer much from the process, you could treat it with the same treatment as open wounds in stone fruit trees. You could use an old chainsaw blade and cut away with the chainsaw or a sawzill I do believe you call them, in Australia a reciprocating saw is what we call them. Job done in ten minutes easy work!

Best to seal  the wound with some horticultural sealant your local garden shop or online shop, you  should be able to find some. This will help in preventing disease entering the wound, ponytail are like matted fibre inside .
