Cycad pollination

Featured Replies

Sounds like a temperature gun would be a handy tool to tell when a female cone was ready to be pollinated

One plant I have not figured out how to pollinate is cycas species. I will learn it in time!

For most Cycas, the female opens her cone when receptive.  Then its a matter of either hand pollinating each nodule, dusting the female cone multiple times over multiple days or just leaving the male cone on top of the female and letting nature do the work.

Dioon, Encephalartos and Ceratozamia are a complete different beast...

Said in reverse,  Cycas are the exception genus among the various Cycad genra.  Female Cycas don't form a true cone.  They just have exposed megasporophylls.
