Hi all,

I have some young Yucca seedlings with two or three leaves and I'm asking myself if they can survive outside already. I would keep them on the covered terrace but temps can go down to -10°C/14°F.

Anyone who has good or bad experiences?

Thanks

Eckhard

I guess the answer would be depends

1st thing I would think would be which species.

Would certainly think flaccida, filamentosa etc. would be fine.  I haven't overwintered my yuccas in pots outdoors. They're planted out. And I certainly don't have many varieties ( filamentosa, rostrata and schottii) So not much real world experience to lean on. My guess is that zone 6 and under should be ok.  I think it could be a bit dicier for zone 7, but I would definitely look for more information from someone with more experience

Well I guess I also have elephantipes but it's staying indoors for the winter ( zone 6 here)

Good luck and hopefully others will chime in

The seedlings are arkansana,  glauca, rupicola, filifera, rigida, fila "rosemarie" and a hybrid between arkansana and pallida.

I life in Zone 7b with moist but not too cold temps.  The problem is that they are all in community pots so a trial with half of each of them isn't possible.

All the bigger Yucca are planted outside too.

Greetings Eckhard

I’m not a yucca expert but is there any need to put them outside? I would say just keep them warm indoors for this winter and maybe consider putting them out next year instead. Then again half of these yuccas grow naturally in deserts where temps vary from blazing to freezing. Up to you I guess.

You're right,

As I need the space they were placed, i took them down to the cellar and placed them under a growing light. I hope next year they can be planted outside.

Thanks
