Hi,

Has anybody had any dealings with GARLBIRD78. Just wanting to know  if it is a scam.

Unfortunately you can’t validate by name only, as scammers are often replying using names of reputable sellers.  🦹‍♂️

Not saying it’s not legit, but it's been happening a lot… especially after someone posts in the “wanted” section.

Hello All,

Just a friendly reminder that it's a buyer-beware world out there.  We've had a lot of reports of someone posting about something they want and then getting a message shortly thereafter promising they have a hook-up for everything you need.  If you get a message like this, be wary.  Sometimes, they give you a user name to message that looks like one of our regulars, but has a few digits or letters transposed.

@iDesign pointed out that it's been happening more and more, and I anticipate that the coming holiday season will amplify these efforts.

Yep. Scammer. They message you and say that another prominent user has the seed you're looking for and then give you a fake email address of that user.

Yes, I've gotten four messages all from scammers telling me to contact such and such over such and such email address for a certain species. I won't even mention the species here to not trigger more scammers which I assume are bots.

You don't have to. Just posting in this thread will get you a message. 😂 I don't know how these bots are getting IPS badges. It makes them look more legit.

This is a question that comes up frequently.  Since there is now a no-cost membership when you join the site, everyone gets a badge.  It should not be treated as an endorsement of a member by the IPS.

Makes sense, but I still had to wait for approval for mine. I guess I showed up before there was free membership though.

Yeah, same game, different time, different rules.  One thing I can tell you from the MOD side, the number of posts never seen because a group of us are hiding them and marking the accounts as SPAM/BOTs - quite a few.  While I was really wanting to don my tinfoil hat and join the Illuminati, something tells me the links they are posting are not legit.

My favorite is still the obvious AI accounts that reply to a 7 year old post basically rewriting the original post. We used to live in simpler times.

The big ones we get are:

  • New account posts cursory reply to get approved (sometimes they do, sometimes they don't).  A few days later they post another post with a SPAM link in it.
  • Similar to above, an introductory post to get approved and then they quote a lengthy post and hide a SPAM link in it somewhere.
  • Account gets registered and starts messaging people (A.K.A. the topic of this post).

Once in a while, they just go straight for the jugular and post SPAM right away.

Either way, it's a full-time volunteer job to keep things clean.
