You get a visit from a friend (Otto) for lunch and what does he bring?

No, not a bottle of wine, but a very small musa ensete ventricosum maurelii.

Doesn't he know that it hasn't worked twice before and each time it was very sad without getting melancholy ...

I have a strong feeling that he knows, from whom only 🤔

yes, I am grateful and happy.

he also brought a small papaya plant. he wants to challenge me, us

Alcohol vs plant?  ..i'll take a plant gift over the " Stupid Sauce " any day..  .Even the most challenging plant they could try and challenge me with..

Bring me a bottle?,  You'll be taking it home,  Un-opened,  Every time.

Proudly sober since 2011. ...and i wasn't even a big drinker to begin with, lol.

Alcohol = totally outdated vice :greenthumb:

Good luck w/ the newbies..

You're right, the plant doesn't have that much danger potential either, except for the ones that sting me and the side effects of an addiction are bad with alcohol.

with the papaya, Otto surprised me a lot, so I'll have to take another look at exactly what it really needs. he also brought me a fresh coconut and said: you'll get it to thrive ...

that's not exactly easy in the long term 🤔😬

A cousin of mine had problems for years until she lost everything. Another man came into her life and took her to his country Croatia and she has been sober for 5 years. They live apart on a farm with animals and plants😄

@Mazat the Ensetes aren't hardy unless grown in virtually frost free areas.  You dig them up in fall or early winter at the first frost and store them dry and replant in spring.  It's a very common practice with them.  You can keep them going for years until they get too big or flower.

And for clarification purposes they are a banana relative, their Genus is Ensete not Musa.

Many thanks for the information and advice, Chester B🤗😄

Yes, we should have dug them out last time. We left them in the balcony and the roots were rotten after winter. It was too damp. Low temperature on the balcony twice

28.4 degrees fahrenheit.

the next time we will do it like you wrote it.

No issues w/ it,  just woke up one day after a night of not so smart decisions and said " what the < insert your own colorful word(s )  are you doing.  This is really dumb.. "

sporadic issues w/ the heat this time of year at times aside, ..ditching the courage sauce was the best health decision made ever..

As far as papaya, yeah... lol  you've got a little work cut out for you on that one..

Your friend Otto sounds like a wise person who likes to challenge you ( w/ plants ) cuz' he sees you've got a green thumb..

When i was in highschool, had a neighbor named Otto who was the same way. :greenthumb:

that's very special, Nathan, that you had a neighbor with the same name and the same way of thinking and interest in plants.
yes, the problem with these things is bad. Otto himself doesn't drink anything, but he knew that I was brought up partly in Italy, so traditionally there's usually a good glass of wine with dinner, but for many people it's not just one glass, without judging it now.
my nonna (grandmother) always said, leave the car even if you've only had a drink and go by bus or cab ...

as far as papaya - yes, that also went through my head, after the joy, so to speak 🤔

I would honestly much rather a plant than a bottle of whatever. Drinks are not that special, they’re a somewhat common gift. I actually consider a plant quite thoughtful, it shows they acknowledge your love for nature. And a plant will grow for a while, long term happiness assuming it survives with you.

If I got a palm tree instead of a cake for my birthday or something, yeah sure I might be a bit disappointed to miss out on a sweet treat but I would have a beautiful tree to admire for years to come.

Just a thought

Him and his wife ( ..And the rest of their family ) were very special people..  They'd share various Bearded ( German ) Iris offsets  and the garden containing those i'd set up in out front yard at the time, attracted the attention of a well known, local??  Photographer who knocked on the door one day asking if he could get shots of them for a magazine.

Was the first " official " plant collection / garden i created on my own i had..

Before he got too sick ( Parkinson's ), he'd mentioned how he knew someone who studied South American species within the genus Lupinus when talking about planty- stuff while i'd help him around the yard ..Which, if you're a Texas or California native, you probably have a notably unique respect for / admiration of  your native Lupines.. My favorite group of CA / Southwestern U.S. Spring Annuals by far..

As for the Papaya,  ..Many folks have raised them successfully -to fruiting-  in colder areas of the U.S.  Trick is understanding that when it is cold / their indoors, be very careful about watering  cuz' too much? ..and they can rot..

Neat plant and if you can get it to fruit, ..that is quite an accomplishment as a plant person.

Not myself ...any more at least, but, from a cultural aspect, i do get the idea of ..as Maz mentions, ..a glass of wine during a special meal / time of day < - many cultures- > .That is cool,  ...if,  like he mentions, ..That's pretty much where any drinking ends..

Would be like having a beer ( never been able to tolerate the stuff myself ) or two while spending a day fishing ...Not on a boat of course..

Sizable difference obviously between something like that and the other, more typical - in the states at least- end of the spectrum..

I too would consider a plant gift a much more significant sign of respect / honor than any bottle..

..That said,   interested in trying some of the Alcho -free alternatives, let alone sit back and spend an evening  observing how different being in an Alc. free establishment compares to the crazy days spent observing  ..and participating in...  the other..

I mean, it is nice to have..more sophisticated  than water or soda ( not great for ya' either ) drink option when hosting parties / a special dinner or whatever..

Cake vs. plant for my B- day? ..Plant, every time, ha ha..  Not sure why but, esp here, couple slices of a really rich cake is a bit much.

Don't care how froofy it sounds to anyone else but,  personal fav. sweet treat?  Give me a slice or two of Angel Food / Shortcake,  some Strawberries ( Rasberries are good too, lol )   ..w/ a little Chocolate,  Allspice or Nutmeg,  and hint of heat ( from Pequin Peppers ) drizzled over some whipped cream on top.  -any  day-

..After you've presented the rare plant i'd been lookin for  gift to me,  lol :greenthumb::D

In my are there are hundreds of acres of hill sides planted out with bananas. Very labour intensive fruit made even harder on steep hillsides. And never mess with a banana grower those bunches get up to 50 plus kilos and they lump them around on there shoulders all day long. I know I have done that as a job and it is hard work made even more fun when a bunch you are carrying on a steep hill and a carpet python snake comes out of the bunch down past your face, you just look at it and wonder what the heck and just shrug it off going great fun to work in bananas! It was a lot of Italian and Greek migrants who owned these farms and many a great day was had at work with such great people who worked hard yet also knew what a hard days work was and made it fun work with friendships lasting a lifetime!
