I have a few Strelitzia reginae “Mandela’s Gold” that I pollinated a few months ago and the first seed pods look like they are ready to harvest. Do any of you guys know if this seed pod is ready to harvest? Thanks

when the seeds are fully ripe, the pod opens by itself!
you just have to wait for the seeds to ripen they take about 3 months here

in this photo together with butiagrus, I have many in the garden

these days I have collected about 50 seeds of giant bird of paradise (strelitzia nicolai)

I don't pollinate them, they are pollinated by bees20250112_104302.thumb.jpg.a3ea347a6f886415bcd0a1876698864a.jpg

Thanks for advising me to wait until they open. After about 2 weeks, two of the pollinated pods opened up. I harvested about 30 seeds from those two pods and I’m waiting on another 4 pods to ripen and open up.

Hello Brian  and good news!
it's starting to get a bit warm here, yesterday I saw 2 bees on a flower, they're starting to pollinate, here it usually takes them 2 months to germinate

Beautiful plants, Gyuseppe.

how low temperatures can they tolerate ?

When does damage start to occur?

Hello Mazat

They can withstand -4 degrees Celsius without damage, but when they are small they can only withstand -2 degrees Celsius

they can only be grown in southern Italy, not in northern Italy
