Clusia rosea is a very common small tree in Florida and the Bahamas. It is also called the Autograph tree.I have tried seeds before with no luck.It seems they lose viability in a matter of days.I want to try cuttings.

There is also a beautiful variegated variety that is a little smaller and slower growth rate. It would be great to have both.

Are there any sources out there?

Thanks,

Check out Sid gardino at Rareflora.com  He has a couple of dwarf varieties that are intense bloomers.

Scott,

Sid may have the large ones as well.  If not, he can probably point you in the right direction.  You might also try Excelsa Gardens in Loxahatchee.

Scott-

I have a few Clusia rosea growing in my yard and would be happy to take some cuttings off to send to you to try and root.

I planted 4 or 5 of them as 3 gallons about 2.5 years ago and they are nearing 6 ft overall height.  I have let them grow as shrubs and not trained them into standards.

Scott--

I have (had ??) a couple of 3gal/12l Clusia rosea at my place as of yesterday, before the landlord helped herself to most of my rarer stuff. I'm on my way out there now; though, technically, I'm not allowed on the property. I'll try to grab it, gunfire permitting... Don't know how to get to you in Guatemala though--please advise.

Scott,

I think cuttings are easily gotten, but how would one get it to Guatemala?

Thanks guys, I have an address in Miami.I do not have problems getting small plants(w/o soil) or small cuttings.I imagine cuttings of 6 inches or less without leaves in an envelope would be great.I can PM you my Miami address.

Scott--

Sorry I didn't grab mine this morning. If someone wants to go by my (former) place at 17435 71st Ln /N in Loxahatchee, they're welcome to whatever they can carry. The landlord and her henchmen took most of the big stuff, including palms and cycads, but there's still some cool things there--

--Lagerstroemia macrocarpa

--Radermchera sinica

--Jacaranda cuspidifolia

--Delonix regia (yellow)

--Lophostemon confertus

--various variegated yuccas, Furcraeas

--others...Just couldn't get any more in the truck. Good homes for any would be appreciated!!

If you can't find Clusia, I can get you cuttings in a month or two when I return from Texas. Good luck!

Once again, just perusing old threads. Anyway, if this is the tree/shrub I am thinking of, I absolutely fell in love with it the last time I was in Miami (on South Beach, it seemed to be commonly used as a sidewalk planting), and I had a dickens of a time trying to figure out what it was when I got home. How are they doing for you, Larry? Have they been in the ground long enough to be tested by cold, and if so, how much have they taken? Sources vary on cold tolerance, but I think they should be much more widely planted around here.

seabreeze palms has variegated clusia.

I was able to get a variegated clusia from Florida a few months ago.I have not planted at the beach yet.I want to see what the flower is like.I think it is spectacular.I have heard that the variegated clusias have a reputation for reverting back to all green.

Someone had both dwarf and full-sized variegated ones at the Ramble at Fairchild last month. The full-sized one is gorgeous. They definitely do revert to all-green (and sometimes all-white). You'll have to keep an eye on these branches and prune them back to more evenly-variegated ones as they arise.

I got a Clusia orthoneura through winter in a pot last year. I planted it out this year and just last week the new buds dropped off as well as ALL its leaves. Not so sure Clusia orthoneura likes the cool, damp soil. Lets see if it ccomes back in spring.
