A few weeks ago my wife Andrea and I drove down to Cudjoe Key, just outside of Key West to visit our good friends Judy and Jim Glock and stay at their house on the water. Some of you will remember them as they have attended many biennials in the past. Their yard is a small size lot, but packed with many unusual palms and well over 150 varieties of crotons. Because of the small amounts of rain that the Keys receive during the year, Jim has installed a sprinkler system that where as every plant has it's own drip line to it, with a low volumn mister head. I believe it comes on everyday for 15 minutes, but yet uses very little water. It's a young garden, maybe 5-6 years old now.

Here standing on the stairs leading up to the second floor, is Judy and Jim.

I am not fully addicted to crotons like I am palms so I guess you can call me a recreational croton fancier.

It is hard to grow a good garden on the rocky soil (or lack of soil) in the Keys.  The Glocks have a nice garden!  Do some people have their own desalination plants?  I have seen some internet stuff on small desal plants.

Nice stuff.  I've got to check out their place next time I'm in the Keys.

No one cares about your current yard temperature 🙃

Jerry,

I'm not too sure about anyone having their own desalination system. It's possible I guess, but would be expensive,no?

Judy is standing under her very proudly grown Caryota ophiopellis. It's been planted only a few short years, was approaching 9' in height and was flawless. This has been a palm that I can't seem to grow in the ground where we live. This was nice to see!

Copernicia ekmanii, a palm that thrives in these conditions down here. Lots of sun, very little rain and a high alkaline soil.
