I have a few kangaroo paw plants and in learning how to grow them for the cut flower industry is a learning cure not rocket science. But to get commercial flowers you need to work the plant. Cutting out the old flowering plant leaving behind the new shoots appearing. You have to remove the old spent flower and the leaves making sure it’s clean of any dead old growth. If you leave you obviously get less flowers along black ink fungus. This is for commercial varieties that have been bred specifically for flowers with no regards as to whether it lives in the ground left alone. Some varieties will not live in the ground containers only others will live but need to be worked to get the  best from them. There are the good old landscape varieties that I just mow down after flowering and leave them as is to regrow next season or you can just simply leave them alone altogether doing nothing to them they  will still produce flowers. As for the rare or hard to grow or new commercial varieties you have to work them or they will get fungus and die. Then there is the fertiliser and sprays if you wish to do so I just go organic it’s easier and  more  environmental friendly method I prefer. It kinda like growing palms there  are two ways to grow a palm work it or just simply plant it and leave to grow both methods work some rare exotics need to worked other easy growing ones plant and forget them.
