Mystery Yucca?

Featured Replies

Hi PalmTalk, I recently bought this yucca from Lowe’s thinking that it looked like yucca rostrata. I am now confused though because the picture on the tag shows a yucca rostrata and the name says yucca rigida. Any help is well appreciated.image.thumb.jpg.55821fd146f22cf2455024b4c7a9d979.jpg

Picture on the tag = Y. rostrata

Actual plant = Y.  rigida..

Not the difference in leaf width between the two sps.

Thank you!

That Yucca is going around in horticulture. It’s an unknown hybrid called ‘Blue Sentry’, likely involving atleast one Yucca from the East Coast.  My guess is recurvifolia x pallida  based on appearance and the fact it doesn’t seem to grow a trunk( pallida), atleast for some time.  Some growers throw Yucca rigida on the tag, which it is not. I own all three in question : ‘Blue Sentry’, rigida, and rostrata.

Hi Daniel,

I'm wondering where do the small rigid leaves come from? Both, recurvifolia and pallida do have wider and not that stiff leaves. Could aloifolia be one of the parents?

The blue sentry sounds not to be that cold hardy. It's also sold in Europe as rigida "Blue senty" hard to -15°C/5°F

Thanks

I think this is a Yucca you have to see in person.

This is real Yucca rigida, IMG_4419.jpeg.6f60203c0a1b2602ae30dc50a20055f2.jpegIMG_4420.thumb.jpeg.21145a6bd3f7d024bd1f3acd5309590b.jpegIMG_4413.thumb.jpeg.e262ccf965333e408106e8dfd78f2bf9.jpegThis is real Yucca pallida, they can grow 2-3 feet wide(reference the oak trunk for size). The flaccid upright twisted leaf form commonly sold is pallida x rupicola . Which is a natural hybrid that commonly occurs in central Texas. You have to go north of Lampasas to see the pure form.IMG_5266.thumb.jpeg.485452971f15e239a0a5b64fd634aa8c.jpegIMG_5277.thumb.jpeg.e0453073f2e8c65984e054e0571becd0.jpegHere are the hybrid sold as ‘Blue Sentry’. They are younger and 1-2 feet wide. They can grow 3-4 feet wide without ever forming a trunk . Yucca rigida forms a trunk early like rostrata.IMG_4416.thumb.jpeg.f71a5118eccb72208b1faecf28f39956.jpegIMG_4415.thumb.jpeg.2cdf7115e0beea168d4e584ef8542a8e.jpegIMG_4414.thumb.jpeg.9fafd496370e70001ebe1d18928846af.jpeg

O.k. These leaves look much wider than the ones I saw in some offers. What cold hardiness do you expect for the hybrid?

Maybe I should give it a try? Both recurvifolia and pallida never suffer in my area.

I have a yucca by that same name, "blue sentry'. It looks just like yours.

I just looked at the tag and it does not mention the species at all. It does mention that it could get to 2-3 foot tall and wide.

I"ve never been certain of it being Y. rigida, because all the ones I've seen are very silvery and the leaves are more narrow.

Daniel posted excellent pics of Y. rigida.

Hi all,

Bought this Yucca as rigida "Blue Sentry" from a french nursery. Hope it's the real one.

Will plant it outside next weekend.

Hope it will survive our winters and grow like estimated.
