Hello, I planted a hardy banana back in June and it has grown a fair bit. It has one large main stem and a few suckers? The largest being around 2 feet tall with a 2 in thick trunk. In the spring, does the corm recycle the old trunks or send up completely new trunks out of the ground? I am afraid since I have only one large trunk and a bunch of others will fall coming around the corner that the plant has a less likely chance of coming back unless it will recycle the small trunks and continue growing or send out new growth from the ground. Thanks

In your area I would mulch over the ground heavily during the winter to protect the corm. The plant will regrow new trunks next spring as long as the corm survives.

It's good that it has suckers.  The big trunk will bloom (and die) in a year or two if you happen to have very mild winters - and the suckers will take over.  As JLM said, mulch it and it should do fine.

Your main trunk should reshoot from the base and will do so until it flowers, as others have stated.  Good chance a couple small pups will develop next spring if you are successful in overwintering.

I have seen videos of people uncovering them in spring and the large trunks are all mush. That is what I am afraid will happen. I wasn’t sure if maybe they did it wrong and the trunks died or if they turn to mush and the corn sends up new offshoots from the ground. I’m planning on covering it with mulch and leaves and I will probably put a tarp over it to keep it dry

Yeah I just thought that these small suckers will die in the winter and they won’t resprout in the spring
