Hello,

I’m curious about the root systems of Acacia trees, in general.

in particular, I’m hoping to learn a little more about what I believe I have as Acacia podalyriifolia which I dug up recently, and is about the same size as in the picture.

Looking to plant it in a terrace that is 3’ (deep) x 6’ (back) x 40’-45’, with block and rebar.  Looking to also plant a few drought tolerant palms, that can take full sun.  Any thoughts on the chances that it will overwhelm the planter with roots?

Thanks!

Being one of the smaller Aus. Acacia sps, ( to approx 16ft in mature height ) i don't think you'll have issues, esp if there is room for the roots to go down below the planter.

If the planter is only 3ft deep w/ cement below that level,  ..that might be an issue.

Cool, thanks.

It’s at street level, and the roots will have room to go into the soil, there.  It’s a highly compacted clayish looking base at the bottom….  I’m hoping to break it down, over time.

:greenthumb: As long as it drains well, i think it should do fine. Pretty sure the soil it grows in  in Aus. is pretty rocky ..much like most of San Diego,  or here..

There's some shots of it trying to invade a clay-ey / rocky looking hillside in Dana Point on iNat.  https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/39255843
