The bat plant a true water lover I had my plant set seeds so I put them they took a long time to germinate more than 12 months then they came up to my surprise I will wait until they get a bit bigger before potting them up i was surprised I got seeds let alone they germinated

Very nice, I’ve never looked for seeds on my black one in the ground. No blooms at the moment but have had 9 blooms at one time.

I have  a friend who has one but it never sets seeds and it’s about 15 years old and huge but my one is around 10 years old her one is growing on the coast mine is inland with cool temperatures so that might be what they need cool weather to set seeds iam not sure if they like cool weather to set seeds or warm weather but I was surprised they germinated

My blacks are planted in the ground and seed regularly. Some germinate and pop out, some don't. I make no attempt to collect them.

My white ones, Tacca integrifolia, never seed. They seem happiest reproducing via subterranean rhizome spread.

This one is a 'green' tacca, I think it's a hybrid....bought it from Tropiflora many years ago, it was labeled 'Emerald Isle'. The true flowers are turquoise colored and the sepals are kinda greenish/black/Grey

You guys have access to all the great plants in Australia it’s very limited to what’s available especially new plants that colour of that flower is amazing I wonder if the white ones are F1 hybrids and may never set seeds

This green hybrid (if it is a hybrid and not some sort of sport) is kind of a mystery. It was offered for a very very short time apparently. If I remember right, I bought it at Tropiflora, the bromeliad place in Sarasota. They used to offer a lot more cool stuff than they do  now, I don't really know what happened to them but they rarely have anything of interest to me anymore.

I don't know what its a hybrid of, or even if it IS a hybrid. But it been called Emerald Isle and Green Emerald. The whiskers are extremely long and very very purple. And the flower color reminds me of the turquoise flowers of a Puma alpestris bromeliad. I don;t know anyone else who has this plant.

The white ones are pretty common here. I've had them for over 20 years. When we moved to the new house out here in 2002, I brought the black and white ones with me. They divide easily, and are even somewhat hardy here in zone 9A if planted out in a protected spot. I have 2 out in the yard that bloom every year but stay smaller overall than the ones in the greenhouse

I should note....there IS a Tacca called Green Isle that is fairly readily available. But it's NOT the same as my plant. It has really bright green bracts and green whiskers. Its totally different from my plant

Figured i would place this pic of mine here since there are no other newer threads about these.  One of my favorites the white one i have is still in a 6 inch pot and a while from flowering.

I love the white bat!

Difficult to photograph them from the front but they are lovely from any angle.

Thank you Happypalms. I enjoy all your posts.
Yesterday I was working where I could reasonably safely take a front view of the same plant.

I did not take more photos but saw that the additional two smaller plants nearby also had one bloom each.

Sometime I will carve out better viewing access on this slope or get brave enough to move these plants to enjoy them closer to a path.

She tells me th most oft seen there is Tacca leontipetaloides, but that Australia has several tacos that are more or less naturalized. They are cool ones, ones I have not seen available in the US before.

Sometimes when I type PALM it comes out PLAM. And every time I type Lasia spinosa I get autocorrected to Lassie spins

I am very excited that I have been able to keep my white bat plant alive! I finally got a good plant to work with. And secondly that it is going to bloom for me! I will post pictures when the blooms open. Can’t wait.

Good stuff Barry. Don’t forget to keep the water up to it they love to drink like an Australian in 40 degree heat. My friend has one in the cool coastal weather it flowers but never sets seeds. My property is 20 minutes drive away that gets temperatures above 40 in summe4 and my one sets viable seeds keep me posted on your one.

Lassie spins sounds like an Indian drink to me if you drink to much of that stuff you definitely spin.

Here’s one I have in a container about 12 years old I don’t fertilise it only water. They are fussy in my climate and I had to move it around just to find the right position that it was happy in.
