I'm not really up on my succulents but looks like an Agave?  Saw this today at an abandoned house in Orange TX.  House has been empty for awhile so I'm pretty confident there was no protection for this past winter's freeze.  I didn't know they could grow like this.

Yep, Agave for sure..

If there's a nice debris filled crotch in a tree, Agave / Yucca or Cacti can sprout in it and essentially act like any other epiphytic plant.

Shot of a large Opuntia growing from a rotted out gap in a tree branch from the Northern Jaguar Project website.. *** Image credit to the Photographer.

Seen Prickly Pear growing in the crotch of a Saguaro / Yucca growing from a hole in an Oak out in the desert as well.
