Free Palm Trees Houston, TX Area

Hey everyone. I am trying to get rid of a few palms as we go into winter. My wife says that they aren't coming back into the living room.

I have a 3 year old coconut palm in a 25 gallon pot. Unfortunately the soil in the pot is lava sand so it is heavy!

I also have 5 or 6 Adonidia merrillii in 3 gallon pots with normal potting soil.

I also have many random small exotic palms in 1 gallon pots. Dypsis pembana,  Dypsis lutescens,  possibly a few others. These are neglected little palms but still hanging in there.

Everything is free. I live in Angleton but can meet in Pearland, Crosby, and will be in Conroe next weekend. If interested let me know. If these palms stay here they will definitely be dead by next spring unless we have a very mild winter.

Hey Jimmy!

I am saving a few special palms for myself. I decided that I would rather pamper a couple of my favorite palms than struggle to keep a small forest of palms alive. I'm not getting out of the palm tree hobby completely.  I am just drastically downsizing until I can get a suitable greenhouse. I lost a lot during the February 2021 freeze then last December took another big hit to my collection. Kind of tired of lugging palm trees around all winter for them to eventually get zapped anyway. One I get a greenhouse I will be back on the hunt for "exotic " palms as long as they are cold hardy to at least 25f.

I feel ya Harlan!  I lost two thirds of my planted palms in 2021 due to the Apocalyptic Freeze.  I have shied away from the exotics too.   I have a greenhouse which saves my cacti, plumeria, and cold sensitive palms.  Lugging them in and out is a chore though.  I have a coconut palm that I summer outside and bring indoors for winter under the lights(at work). The greenhouse can get too cold for the coconut even with heaters up here in Zn 8b.  Looks as if TJ is gonna help you out!  I would if I were closer and could provide better for cold sensitive palms.

Ol Palmageddon ! Us Texas folk may never get over that winter. Would even say has changed many of our perceptions of what zone we really are and how much we're willing to do to keep certain palms alive now. My container ranch is busting at the seems but I have plenty of space to over winter now. @HtownPalms we definitely can do some trading if you like even tho it sounds like you need to just downsize some = )

Hey TJ,

Another forum member reached out to me through private messages right after I posted my ad.  I promised him some palms, but I have enough that you can have some as well. I think he is taking the Coconut palm, but I have multiples of everything else. I will look and see what all I have and let you know. For sure I have Adonidia merrillii and some neglected but healthy Dypsis sp. Palms. No need to worry about trading. I just want to give them to good homes before the real cold weather arrives.

It's all good as I was saying my container ranch is busting at the seams and I don't really need to take on anymore tender palms haha Just didn't want them to die a miserable death haha

Sorry to hear about your giveaway but good that you're at least saving some!  I usually just haul stuff from my container ranch in the garage for the worst of the freezes since there usually isn't more than a night or two per cold event.  I could give the coconut a good home here in the RGV if the other forum member can't get it.  :)

Hi Fusca! I would love for my Coconut Palm to go somewhere it has a chance of making it. I will definitely give that to you if he doesn't want it. I'm not sure what he wants but it sounded like he would take anything I give him. He is a student in Alabama I believe.  We went to the Florida Keys a while back and when we were there I was enjoying the thousands of Coconut Palms. I got to thinking and had wished I brought mine to plant somewhere down there. It would have been cool to know it's somewhere that it will thrive and maybe go back years later and see it as a large tree. But alas that didn't happen.

Agree - it's got to feel good knowing that a palm that you had grown is thriving somewhere whether in your yard or somewhere else.  I promise that you can come visit it anytime you want!  :)
