Cordyline australis high altitude form

Featured Replies

Looking to get a cutting or seedlings of the Cordyline australis high altitude form from south island where it gets colder. Hardy to Zone 7b.

Mark shares about his plant in Raleigh. No response to my email from him. Anyone else know where i can get one?

That link just keeps sending back to this posting, not a "youtu.be"?

This link works.

I'm also interested in where this variety can be purchased. None of my trunking Cordylines made it through this past winter

There is a different species called Cordyline indivisa, sometimes known as mountain cordyline, but it is a very rare plant in the US and would likely need to be grown from seed sourced directly from NZ. Seed sourced in US seems unreliable.

Not sure if that's what you're looking for. It appears a bit different in the habitat and garden photos I've seen than what's in the clip you shared. Wider blue-green leaves, very beautiful. Not sure how far its hardiness extends, but it is referred to as a mountain species. Hybrids of the two species exist.

Good luck.

Chris is correct about Cordyline indivisa.  The species is not propagated or sold in California.  Even Monrovia is selling wrongly named plants.  I saw one recently at our neighborhood retail nursery.   They ae always just some weird variant of C. australis.  Actually, it resembles the 'high elevation' form mentioned at the start of this thread.

Here is an image of the true species.  I purchased this one from  Cistus nursery.  However, it was killed by a gopher and I have never obtained a replacement.  Note the distinctive orange midrib and bluish color,  quite different from the wrongly labeled material sold in California.

I think those C. indivisa are rather finicky and can die off unexpectedly and for no obvious reason. They really only prefer coolish shaded conditions.
