This is my little havardiana that I got from PDN. It's grown well in the past year or so I've had it. It wants to be repotted but I was going to wait for spring. I noticed this pup poking out the drain hole. The pot sits in an elevated planter so not concerned about smooshing it, just looking for ideas about removing it and replanting the pup. It's currently in a turface/coir/garden soil mix so fairly fast draining. TIA

I try and leave them until they are at least about 3 inches in diameter.  The success rate is better and they root in and grow faster.  In that ceramic pot it might be a pain (literally and figuratively) to get it out without ripping it apart.  In that respect it might be better to do it sooner rather than later.  If it grows a caudex/bulge inside the pot and leaves outside...it ain't comin' out without busting the pot up!

Yep... Agree w/ Mer. This is gonna be one tricky extraction.. there may be no option for removing it that doesn't involve sacrificing the pot to save that baby... One reason i avoid "nice" pottery like the plague.. I'd be destroying lots of $$$ every 2 or 3 years.. lol

You'd be surprised at how strong those pups can be too.. Some sp. i have that constantly pups sent the runner a pup is attached to in a circle around the inside of the plastic pot it was in before peeping out of a drain hole. Another pup that slid out of one of the drain holes on the bottom, proceeded to lift the pot, before breaking through it, haha.

Well the pot is glazed steel, something my wife bought because they looked nice,  so we'll see how that goes 😐 It's funny you mention the pup coiling around the pot. That's what this little guy did when it went from the old pot to this one.  It's the only agave I've owned so i thought it was just a deep root and repotted it...

Your Wife:  "Hun, what's going on with this pot.. The plant you put in it broke it..."

Your response:  " It's an Agave, they're Metal eating Aliens.."  😁🤣

All jokes aside, You could tilt the pot long enough for the pup to grow out to a length where you can cut it off, and it will have semi dormant roots, currently tucked under leaves, to regenerate itself after being replanted..

Unfortunately, that won't stop other pups the mother plant produces from trying to escape the same / other drain holes.
